To trade or not to trade...that is the question

Just for $hits and giggles I went to a local Mazda dealer to check out the new Mazda 3. I like the Interior but the new grill is horrendous, it looks like a clown. After talking to the dealer about some of the updates I was about to leave but a 2008.5 Mazda speed3 caught my eye. When I was shopping for my lancer I loved the speed3 but was out of my price range at 25k for the grand touring. So i got the dealer again and started asking questions about it. One thing lead to another and I ended up test driving it on there private Track (Largest used car dealer in the midwest, yes they have there own private track) and WOW its fun to drive. so we got to talkin about it and the sales manager says he wants my car as a trade(why, I dont know) and he would try and make me a deal on the speed3. I say what the hell, whats your offer.
Well he takes my car to get it appraised and comes back and offers me 15k on my trade. At first I say no thanks but then he says he will knock off 4,500k off the price of the car. Basically he explains he needs to get rid of his 08.5's so he just has the 09's and the upcoming 2010's.
I still owe 17.3k on the car after only 8 months of paying so im in the hole. But with the 4500 off Im lookin at 22.2k plus tax on the 7200 difference so I'm lookin at around 22.7k otd on a car with a 24,799msrp. Oh and did I mention 263Hp, xenon headlights, rain sensing wipers, bose audio and the rest of the works

What would you do??

Any thoughts?

If I get flamed, all well. I'm just looking for input.

since you only have a lancer GTS and not an evolution...it would be tempting to me too. I just don't like the feel of a FWD car. The speed 3 does look good, but I'm just not a fan of it.

I checked out the MazdaSpeed3 before getting an Evo X (this is for my wife and she likes hatchbacks). I liked the Mazda but the crash ratings were not so good (kids) and it was kind of small. But anyhow, the asking price at the dealer a month ago was right around $20K for an 08. These were not high mileage cars. Still had plastic and everything. Just FYI.

Appreciate your input , thats what I would be around if I wasn't 2300 in the hole. You think I should ask for more for my car? It only has 7400 miles.

I'd put your car on Craigslist and see if you can get a better price for it. You can probably find a comparable deal on an 08 'speed3 at a number of dealers. Just make sure you verify that before you close a deal on your own car.

if you trade in your going ot lose out, might as well go nuts turboing your car and adding all the custom mods you like. its cheaper to go down that road then trade up.

Well, he flat out told you he needs to get rid of it for new stock. So, just try and work him down some more. Can't lose with just negotiating..either of you can say no. I've seen some crazy deals happen this way. Good luck
