Demographics
Okay, I was just wondering if anyone had any kind of access to the demographics that the US Lancer is catering to. I mean, I read in another thread that 75% of Lancer owners are women, and I find that VERY hard to believe, given the Lancer's traits.
I mean, the styling suggest that it is trying to appeal to the import tuners, and from reports from the west coast and here in Texas, that is working. That being said, we could probably conclude that it is appealing to the lower income status of the 16-25 male who has tuning in mind. Or at least that's how this 16-25 male sees it. I would set up a poll for gender on this, however the results would be far from accurate in that obviously if you hang around this site, then tuning IS definitely in mind, and so the results would be skewed to showing what I think they are.
Someone, post some genuine numbers so that I don't feel like I'm driving a girl car.

I would tend to disagree. To me, it seems as though Mitsubishi is going after the chick/gay/yuppie/college loser crowd.
That one commercial with the idiots singing, that played over and over and over and over. They beat this into the minds of the public that the car is for wierdos like the ones that stared in that commercial.
At least that is what I gathered from it!

Okay… maybe I misstated my purpose… I really don’t car so much about who else is driving my car than my curiousity was piqued about the population’s age/gender breakdown. The whole, I kinda want to know if I’m driving a chick car was more a joke than a genuine concern.
Really, what it comes down to is that the 99-02 RS/GS/GT Eclipses seemed to be predominately driven by women. Then, the 03 GTS comes out, and BAM, every time I turn around, guys are driving them 9 times out of 10. Kinda strange in this guy’s opinion.
I was kind of ignoring the ad campaign because it didn’t really factor into most of the peoples buying of the car. That, and everyone I’ve talked to absolutely hates the campaign in the first place, and if anything, it was more a deterrent than a beneficial factor into buying the car.
You gotta look at the CAR ITSELF in my statement, in that the whole design of the car screams for attention from young males of the tuning mindset, as far as the looks go. We all know it’s a sheep in wolves’ clothing, but, at the same time, not like a Civic is a massive powerhouse, but that hasn’t ever deterred tuners anyway.
And, really, BADWRX, I kinda find your statement to be a tad bit hard to take as something unbiased, and it seems like a poorly veiled slap to US Lancer owners. That whole chick/gay/yuppie/college LOSER crowd was a bit out of line. I don’t think that any car company aims at a crowd with those qualities in mind. Yeah, I’m sure Mitsu sat down, and said, “You know… I don’t think enough losers are buying our cars… that’s really what I think would be a good image for our company. Mitsubishi Lancer: the Loser’s Choice!!!” Sounds more like a slam because we didn’t choose to spend an extra 10 grand for all wheel drive, a turbo, and in my personal opinion, and *** ugly front end. Whatever floats your boat, but, please when you respond to my posts, use a little more wit to insult me.

You took me all wrong. In my opinion, enthusiasts are not losers! I was referring to the ad campaign, and what appeared to the the target market.
Sorry if I misrepresented myself.
You guys are cool. If you weren't, I wouldn't be here. If you want to get right down to it, stupid Subaru is actually on the record as targeting Gays & Lesbians. I really despise Subaru my man, and I regret purchasing the WRX. It is fast, and I like that attribute, but it is that the car stands for here in America. When people think Subaru, they think Birkenstock's and long hair, and the color purple. Well, it is not like that in Japan. FHI rocks, and markets to enthusiasts, not ****. Take a look at the demographics of WRX drivers. You have the hard core modders like myself, then you have the idiots that buy it to go skiing.
SUBARU OF AMERICA IS THE DEVIL!!!

And don't insult the looks of the WRX. That "*** ugly front end" will eat you alive. I actually have an S202 JDM front end, if you know what that looks like.
I will actually side with you. The stock WRX is **** ugly. JDM HIDs and grill, and a big and mean Blitz FMIC will take car of that action.

Just so you know, I love every car with a "J" as the first letter of the VIN number. Be it JN (Nissan is my personal favorite manufacture), JT, JM, JF, JH, and I don't know the code for Mazda J*something!
I hate cars with a 1, 2, 3 as the first digit, and only very few with a W (Read Porsche and M bimmers).

a couple of intresting notes on demgraphics 1. recall when reading stuff about the lancer before i bought it that it was maked to the 18-30 single crowed 60% women 40% men. another fun fact I read about subaru in america is that is the number 1 car for lesbiens I read this on a site that I found while researching demograpics for a collage project so at least the gay comment prevously mentioned would have to go with subaru another intresting thing to ponder if u see a hot chick in a wrx and u think wow hot she likes cars great women she thinking damn man........ just my 2 cents
Okay, that being cleared up, we're on good terms. If you re-read that post, you gotta admit, it did seem a bit like a slap. I still think that mitsu wasn't targeting that bit of the market, though, I have no doubt about subaru... at least the lesbian part... what with the Rugged outdoorsy image. I'm just kidding, of course.
As for eat me alive, again, that's in a totally different category price wise and performance wise. Say I could get eaten alive by a Civic, and I'll take offense.
Again, I really don't take offense to the possible target, but, I am curious as to the breakdown. Hell, they put it in with gays, that doesn't bother me, seeing as I bought it as a cheap tuning platform (which I'm not at all disappointed by on the price side, or the tuning side, now that the aftermarket is firming up). Anyway... glad we cleared that up.
