Whole assembly comes out. Remove 3 nuts on top (front; rear has 2 nuts), remove the bolt from the control arm, pull strut out. Put in coilover, put bolt back in, put nuts back on. Tune and then drive.

Since you bought the upper plates, it's gonna be a direct swap for you. Put the tein stuff together and you'll only need about 30 minutes to do the install. I would recommend keeping your jack handy, though. I had to use mine to get the new strut into the holes after I'd attached it to the control arm, because it's quite a bit smaller than the stocker... or at least that's what I found. Also, some loctite will come in handy. I had trouble with a club member's bolts coming loose no matter how much we torqued them (started at spec and worked up from there). If you don't own an impact gun, see if you can rent an electric one from a parts store, or you can buy one from Harbor Freight for about $70 (and you'll use it all the time )

good luck!

damn 30 min install? i wished you lived near me, when i put them on my car it probably took me at least 3 hours. But i had never done it before, and i took a lunch break, and i had to run to harbor freight and buy an impact gun

taking apart and putting the struts and springs together. also helps speeds things up a lot, like taking the bolts off that are holding the struts to the control arms etc.

Go to the how-to forums and see my write up on installation. And your kit came with instructions right? They were pretty thorough if I recall. And yeah, if you're not using a spring compressor an impact gun is helpful. Might be able to get away with just a drill/driver though.

Easy installation, first time took me 3.5 hours, second time took about 2, and each time is stil including like a half hour of staring trying to remember how to get the rear shocks out (hint, detach part of the sway bar). And make sure to note the order of the washers in the sway bar if you still have a stock one. Putting them back on backwards is a problem.

THis was asked in the thread but not answered. BASICS compared to SS. Where does the dampening level of the basic come on the 1-10 scale compared to the SS. 1 being soft and 10 stiff.

sales@tein.com write them and ask! It seems that nobody on this board knows for sure.

SS goes 0 (stiff) to 16 (soft).

Basic ranks at 9 in that spectrum.

which would translate to about 5.5 on mojambo's 1-10 rating system.

I'm gonna go for the Tein SS kit. The dampening should prove intresting and I'm gonna try and hit the track this year so I think it'd be the best choice for me but if you don't plan on running your car any harder than just around town, taking turns quickly the basic is PLENTY. With that stiff of a setting they should be fine I highly doubt a street driver would even notice the diffrence between the two. The only reason that you would need the adjustibility is just as urbanknight stated, that by messing with the dampening between front and rear suspensions, you can fine tune oversteer when you are off the throttle. With strut bars I noticed this ALOT. Gettin on freeway onramps with big uturns, as i was on the throttle the car felt much more neutral with minimal understeer but the second i let off the throttle the SLIGHT oversteer would set in and getting back into the throttle corrected it right back everytime! But with the coilovers they wouldnt make that much of a diffrence in this case they would just compliment the strut bars... if that makes sense, but when on the track you'll take anything you can get to help you gain just slightly better handling.

Just a sidenote - the coilovers don't exactly compliment the strut bars. I have all the bars, so I know.

The strut bars compliment the coilovers. When you first install the Tein kit, your first drive will seem like there's ZERO BODY ROLL. The coilovers make that much difference. After that, the various bars just help out.

To further clarify, the coilovers drastically reduce the body roll, and the strut bars and sway bar help it a little more as well as help you to balance the front and rear for desirable handling characteristics (oversteer, drift, etc.)
