Door Panel
How do you take off the outside door panel on the right side? I have a nasty scratch in the door and its starting to rust. I am thinking about just replacing the outside, but I have not found any How-Tos for it. I really don't have the money to get it fixed they estimated it at $1400 because they said they would have mold metal over it and such. Its an 2002 Lancer LS. Any help would be awesome guys!
Thanks!
Thanks!

When you say "outside door panel", do you mean the outside metal skin? Any pics so we can give you a better recomnnedation? If it's not bad, why not Bondo and re-paint? To replace the entire outside, you'd have to break the smaller welds that bind the skin onto the door frame.

buy some rust neutralizer and bondo, sand the rust down, spray nuetralizer on, sand again, apply bondo, sand that, then take it to a shop and just tell them to paint it, 200 bucks max

You mean the door skin?
I'll give you a quick run down on how to replace a door skin.
1. Remove everything from the door shell while it is on the vehicle.
2. Remove the door shell from the vehicle and place it on a stand of some sort.
3. Safetly glasses, ear plugs, face shield, gloves on.
4. Grind around the outside edge of the door skin until it start to come off
5. Remove the door skin, any adhesive, remaining paint, and scrap metal from mounting flange
6. Straighten the flange back out
7. Prep new door skin for install (test fit, scuff mounting surface with sandpaper)
8. Apply seam seeler/bonding adhesive
9. Place skin on shell and "hem" the flange
10. Refinish to match
11. Reinstall everything
Now... would I suggest you do that if you had to ask how and have never done it? No. Leave it to the professionals. Don't let them bend you over and ram it home though... $1400 is way too much to charge for just reskinning and refinishing a door. For $1400 you could buy a new door (shell, skin, and probably everything inside). If you don't want to pay somebody to do it... find a totalled Lancer with a good door and buy the whole thing, even better if it is the same color.
