hi all i'm a noob and just started modding so, sorry if this q sounds lame. I did try to search in faq tho didnt find what i want to know. i just changed my muffler 2.5" catback and next logical step is to change the intake with either CAI or WAI doesnt matter, but my mech warned me that it will 1) damage the engine coz crap will enter and pollute the engine, 2) void the 100k warranty. Is this true? what was your experience if you been driving aroudn with an intake for 3-5 yrs? did u have major problem with your engine? i'm talking about daily driving and none of track time. thx.
hmm..ive never heard of it damaging your engine...so i doubt that..but i could be wrong idk..and im pretty sure that it will only void the warranty if you have a problem that directly has to do with that aftermarket part..sayyou get the intake and your a/c stops working down the road...that should still be covered..but again i could be wrong..
im pretty sure if u get a true cold air intake then u may get water in it. a short ram wouldnt cause its in the engine bay. Im not sure but stuff cant get in cause theres a filter on it. Dont know about the warranty question.

1. thats the filters job....filter the air.,keep the filter clean and u will be ok.,
2. asfar as the CAI, just avoid driving in flooded areas so u dont suck on water.,
3. on the warranty...that depends on the dealer., keep your stock intake so if you need to take the car in, slap the stock one real quick...Happy motoring!!!

CAI's, depending on their design, can be prone to ingest water and can hydrolock an engine - not good. As long as you don't drive thru deep water with them, you should be fine. Make sure the intake is a good quality one, otherwise a crappy filter element can indeed not filter as well as the OEM filter and lead to problems.
If a dealership is looking to deny a warranty claim, all they need to see is an aftermarket part and they'll blame whatever on it. Won't matter whether it is actually related to it or not, or even if the dealership is legally required to honor the warranty (Moss-Magnuson Act). That's why many people put the stock parts back on their cars if they have to take it into the stealership for any sort of major warranty work.

A properly oiled air filter will work for a 1,000,000 miles! per K&Ns commericals. Just stick with sri, cuz I've driven through LA and the roads plain suck! So in order not to worry about water on the road, go sri. I've had my RMR sri on since 20k miles? and not ever a problem. Just reoiled the filter once with a K&N filter recharger kit. Simple.
whoa thanks everyone for the good pointers.....it sounds like water is one fo the major offender here.....i read that too in the faq and stuff. Good thing i live in LA where mostly its sunny here even in winter it only gets cold but hardly raining. I'll be sure to keep that in mind when i do change. Hm. i dunno what to do. On the one hand i want that shiny intake in my bay i mean i done changed the muffler, what the heck did i change it for if i dont combo that with intake rite??? but on the other hand i should consider my mech warning. Hes a master in his craft, i mean he builds track n rally cars and specializes in mitsu (he's got the sickest evo race and montero off road with full snorkel!). Hmm. I wonder how severe a damage hes talking about. I should ask him when i have the chance. I mean, i see lots of ppl drive around in intakes....and how come all the ads glorify intakes then....i thoght muffler n intakes are the basics of basic. Sorry i m just really intrigued by what he says and what i always been led to believe about these 2 thing.s Like durability issue, the engine wont last as long maybe if intake is there. anyways thanks everyone for the good leads 'preciate it much!

Anyone who has ever owned an oiled, cotton-gauze filter can tell you that over-oiling after cleaning is a possibility. Manufacturers have metering systems that apply the exact amount of oil necessary to new cotton-gauze filters, but squeeze and spray bottles commonly used to re-oil these filters after cleaning can lead to accidental over-oiling, which can damage a vehicles Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) if the oil is pulled along the inlet onto the MAF."
also talking to some ppl who have intakes in their bay told me that POTENTIALLY engine damage could result from small rocks that got sucked from the road below and just honestly debris in the engine bay, i mean its not the cleanest place for a filter. also they told me if i didnt install it right (too loose/ too tight) will bring problem. However, ppl that i spoke to said they know no one who ever had an engine damaged bcs of intake. So i dunno, i thikn i'll go with the intake route but maybe i'll wait till at least my 5 yr warranty's out.
