The screws marked with red need to be taken out really carefully not to bent the rail. Half a rotation each out of them. You can start with one rail and then go to another that way you won't get confused. After you will take out the screws make sure to get a magnetic pick up tool so u can fish for the lifters after they will easily fall out of the rocker arms. It's good to have some kind of duck tape or something to hold the lifters in place.
After setting everything on the ground where it won't get dirty take a needle or a paper clip and inster it inside of the lifter and the with your fingers push the lifter so the oil will come out of it. Some instruction say you need to refill the lifters with a clean oil before installing them in but I didn't do that. Also you should clean the lifters with a brake cleaner. Do not push the needle too hard inside of the lifters assembly otherwise you will collapse the spring inside of it. Clean out little holes in rocker arms to make sure nothing is in there blocking the oil from gettin into the lifter. Reinstall.

we re-used the same headgasket and put down 10 lb more feet of torque when we tightened the head onto the block (to ensure i wouldnt blow the headgasket or have it leak) could that have anything to do with this gurus?

BTW blue spots are where lifters are located, right underneath that little hole. Can you believe that oil is supposed to go through that little thing??? Oh well. Have fun, it didn't work for me so now I'm trying to live with the tractor noise.

You are not taking off your head. Just the valve cover.

For the rails you really need to be careful, you know little rotations each nut, and put a lot of oil on them. Make the nuts on the rails tight. Valve cover loose, just like it was stock.

I don't want to waste your time bro. Fishing for lifters, bleeding them, refilling, it will take some time and in the end I doubt you will get rid of the noise.

just throwing stuff out. in greg's thread, mitsiman suggested the lifters might not be the problem. so all that's left is checking cylinder pressure and valve to rocker clearance. and then more stuff...

Knock I guess a warning before preignition or detonation cause by lean AF ratio or/and bad timing, high EGT.

I'm really not sure how it is supposed to sound so if someone could correct me. I think it's supposed to sound like a dying car, for example when you run out of fuel.
