Brake question
I came across a situation with some NAPA metallic pads where I put them on an Intrepid and they squealed like crazy. I asked NAPA about it (lifetime warranty) and they asked if I had the rotors turned. I said no they didn't need it. They said the surfaces between the old rotors and the new pads were incompatible. So I took it all apart again and got them turned and its been cool ever since, like 40,000 miles ago. These rotors were smooth and shiny enough to use them as a mirror before I got them turned. Just something to keep in mind.

The main cause for the squeal is a glazed rotor. From enough heat, and rotational wear, the rotor will be "polished" to a fine glassy look. This does not hurt your braking performance (at least not in normal driving). Resurfacing or "turning" the rotor will get rid of this. Most shops like autozone and kragen charge like $15 at most per rotor. You can see this with the wheels on....does your rotor look smooth and shiney....with mild grooves around it?
Found out some cool info today at school about this. Another reason for squeal is harmonic resonance (sp?). As you apply the brakes, there could be a very high frequency vibration from the pads that causes squeal...the fix for this is the pad grease on the backing plate. It acts as a sponge absorbing the vibration. I just thought the grease was to keep things sliding smoothly.
well i have been driving on them and they only make noise when i apply little presure 2 them. Me I step down i down hear and noise. Sometimes when I apply little presure I dont hear any noise. I replaced the brakes not to long ago. I had the stock ones for about 30K miles while the others failed in 5k. What should i do
