CVT (D) vs Sport mode

Hello everyone!

Am I the only one thinking (and feeling lol) that when driving in D the car accelerates faster than in "sport mode" (aka paddle shifters) ?

Especially when driving at around 30-40 or 50 mph , when you floor it in D it goes much faster than when you floor it and downshift with the paddle shifters...

What do u guys think?

cheers

so long as the car remains at a peak power RPM point then thats what you will get with a CVT theoritically.

No. I noticed the exact opposite.

If you have it in drive, and you accelerate vs. having it in the tiptronic, it will only accelerate faster if you leave it in 6th gear. If you downshift to third or second, you'll end up accelerating a lot faster by shifting yourself. At least, that's how it seems to me.

I noticed that in the lower speeds and RPM s, (Like 1st, 2nd, and 3rd) I accelerate a lot faster in sports mode. Then I shift it to D once i get ready to go into 4th gear and I accelerate faster.

0-60 is no doubt faster via manual shifting. Off the line though, It seems that the standard Drive mode is quicker for my car. It really depends on the CVT though, it reacts differently for each of us based off what it learned initially. When I test drove the CVT it was a dog but I wasn't after speed so I bought it anyway. But its really another animal now. Its just a hair away from breaking the tires loose on pavement but will unload the inside tire if turning and accelerating hard. Hopefully someone comes out with a flash for the CVT brain because mine gets to about 45mph in first gear in manual mode...would be a hellava lot quicker if it was something like 30-35mph first gear

Unlike in D mode where there is a float in terms of engagement between the engine and transmission 90% or less. When you are in Sport mode your gear (pulley ratio) is 100% fixed. Or in traditional Manual transmission terms, your car gear is engaged fully. accelleration will be 99% determined by throttle position. The transmission is still government by the CVT ECU which if it detects the wrong gear or a fault will override the driver.

When in CVT , you will notice when you take your feet of the gas there may not be much engine braking effect, the CVT transmission will govern the float /engagement.

most of this is at low speeds. anything within the realm of normal driving your very smart or very stupid CVT ECU is controlling inputs while you are in CVT mode.

Unless you do something outside the parameters of Sport Mode you should have full 100% engagement control of the gear you are in.

Does that make sense, lol god maybe i should try again lol oh well.

I have a 2012 Lancer GT. Does anyone have this happen to them and is there any way to override this?

So, I enable Sports Mode with the paddle shifter and it gets me in Sports Mode. However, when I stop at a red light or when my car is stationary, it'll pop me back to "D" and I'm no longer in Sports Mode. I find it so annoying that I have to shift up while rolling to get back in Sports Mode. Am I not enabling the Sports Mode properly to keep it in that mode?

I don't even know why the 2012 sucks so much that it doesn't have the +/- on the shiftgate (the P,R,N,D,L part). The 2011 has it :/ pretty freaking stupid. Also, the rims (Canada) on the new 2012's are stupid too, they look so tiny.. compared to the 2011 models which look nicer :/

Thats just how it works. The only thing that would make it stay in sport mode would be the +/- range on the shifter. The shifter is plug and play on the 08-10 de and es models. But after 2010 they stopped being plug and play. so unless you want to experiment with some splicing of the TCM harness, you'll just have to get used to toggling sport mode every time you stop.

Thanks for a prompt reply. I've seen on another forum about equipping the older Lancer GTS' shifter and doing all that to make that work.. I guess that's the only way to change it. :/

In my opinion, Sports mode > CVT
