Lancer 02 OZ trans issues

Hi all I am a total newbie and I am looking forward to getting some help from all of you. I bought a 02 Lance OZ for my son who will be returning from boot camp and training in October. I am not giving him this car he is paying me for it and I am going to fix it up for him so he has a good car to go to work in his new carear. The shifter is sticky (I need more or better info on replacing the Bearing and its location) I also an getting a grinding between 2nd and 3rd when the car is cold (it gets better after you drive the car for a short time) The car is stock except for the Megen suspension. The car has only 86000 mi and was a one owner. Thanks Ed

I'd check and make sure it has good/enough oil in the trans.
As far as the shifter being "sticky" and where "the bearing" is... The stock shifter could be described as "sticky" I guess.
What "bearing" are you asking about?

The shifter is seated in a plastic housing and has two cables going from it to the tranny for shifting.
I'd take the shifter apart (you can get a step by step here https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/la...ifter-kit.html) and I'd lube all touching parts and inspect it.

If you replace the gear oil in the tranny and it still grinds then it sounds like you may have a synchro going out in your tranny.

Thanks for the information. When I referred to "the bearing" it was in reference to another post that said he replace the bearing with one from a roller skate to fix the problem with the shifter play or lack of. Thanks again for the info good stuff

What you're talking about is the under-hood shifter bushings.
They are on top of the trans, there's two of them and the cables I was talking about earlier going from the shifter to the trans connect to them.

You can replace them the way you read or you can buy replacements from a company like speed-source.net.
I bought mine and they do help but it never was so bad I thought I had a problem before I changed them.
Take a look at yours and see if they are broken.

You can also replace the shifter base bushings with metal ones.
Every little bit helps.

Also try taking your cables loose at the under-hood bushings and lube them up with lithium grease.
This may help as well.
But all and all you can't go wrong with replacing them with metal ones.

I replaced the bushing with a roller skate bearing. That's correct. It's still working nicely nearly a year after.

There is nothing more to say about it really. I got the bearings, remove the old bushings, put the bearings on and enjoyed.
In my thread you'll notice I said 1 did not fit, or did not seem like it would fit at all. Turned out the metal sleeve that was between the bushing and the pivot pin was keeping the bearing from sliding over the pivot pin. Once the sleeve was removed(fkn b!0tch), the bearing went right in.
