Automatic Transmission Upgrade
Does anyone have any ideas or really good suggestions on what I can do to my automatic tranny to upgrade it, to allow me to have better performance, quicker shifts etc... without changing it to a manuel Tranny....Please good advice, it would be greatly appreciated.....!
we need to get B&M or transgo to make a shiftkit for the Lancer transmission...
they have a nice one out for the 4L60E of camaros....i want one for my lancer, and a new servos or something lol

would that work on our transmission?

Am I wrong in saying the Lancer auto is computer controlled and thus lacks conventional servos and shift point settings?
I know it wouldn't have a TV cable. I also know my Ralliart auto is computer controlled, I was sure the regular Lancers were too. The PCM controls the shift points and shift harshness. I'm sure someone could design some sort of controller to over ride the PCM's settings.

you are correct... US lancers all have the PCM controled transmission with varriable shift points. The only way to really upgrede it for performance is to find out how it can be reprogramed. As far as making it better and stronger, you can upgrade the TC, gears, clutches, and maybe even the hydrolic pump.
If you know how to use the auto as a sport shifter you can find quite a bit of extra power as far as rolling acceleration goes (passing power).

You can shift like a manual minus the clutch.... It still is nothing compared to a manual trans, but you have more control over the RPM range throughout the gears. You have to keep an eye on the tach (or just listen to the engine) and know when to let of the gas to avoid slamming into a gear. The downshifts are what I am talking about for "passing power". Throughout driving, weather highway or city, the trans always gets to OD as soon as you reach a constant speed dropping the RPM to around 2-3000 (est.). @ 60 MPH if you down shift into 3rd your RPM revs to around 3500-4500, this is a good range to get HP from. Once you down shift and then hit the gas the car will accerate quicker than if you just gave it gas with out the downshift. This is because the computer take a few second after you hit the gas to auto downshift. It is more beneficial for downshifts than for dead-stop acceleration simply because you are already rolling. It works good also with using 2nd gear on the streets, with the RPM in the power range (@ around 45 MPH in 2nd) it will give a pretty good launch if your just coasting along.

if you reset your ecu by disconnecting the battery for 10 min or so and then reconnect it, your shiftmap will be reset also. then all thats left is for you to full throttle the car for the next 20 or so miles (through every gear, i.e. if you WOT through third and pussyfoot 4th then 1-3 will be aggressive while 4th comes like your grandma's station wagon.) the ecu is constantly monitoring how you drive and optimizes the shift points and harshness depending on that data. my personal favorite thing to do, although is prolly not condusive to long transmission life, is to WOT to about 100-200 before redline, completely release the gas for a half second or so, then smash the gas again. the TC will spin and lock up before the transmission shifts, allowing a more manual-esque shift for better acceleration. its hard to conceptualize unless you really go out in your car abd try it. I HIGHLY suggest you reset your ecu prior to doing this if it is much different than your current driving style since the ecu will try to shift on the old map and who knows what kind of awful sounds it will make if you attempt this on a grandma shift map. i dont mean to toot my own horn or sound ridiculous so please take the next statement with a grain of salt: doing this i have fooled people outside and inside my car into thinking i have a manual. if you really want to complete the illusion, take the shifter bulb out and feign shift movements when you do what i mentioned earlier, fun for the whole family! amaze your friends! btw when people ask me, bewildered, if i have a manual or auto i simply tell them its a manumatic, always good for a chuckle or blank stare.
ps. i take no responsibility if you F up your lancer even tho i have been driving like this for 45k miles with no problems to report.
EDIT: GAH! how is it someone beat me to the punch?!?!?
EDIT2: i also forgot to mention that using the shift map that i do, whenever you are cruising at 1/3 or 1/2 throttle and you go WOT it 95% of the time drops a gear automatically for you, essentially downshifting without the need to risk unneccessary wear on the TC

Correct me if im wrong, but doesnt the RRM piggyback unit for the auto lancer change shift points for more agressive shifting? If it does then there's a quick way to gain a better powerband and eliminate "granny shifting" in the automatic lancers out there at the same time, killing two birds with one stone. I have a manual OZ (aem cai and greddy exhaust) and the piggyback was well worth it for me... I'm sure i'd do wonders for you automatic lancer guys. Only downside is paying 20 cents more a gallon for gas. Oh well, I gotta get used to it because I'm saving up for an evo anyways and i'll have to use 91 with it too.
well i have a rrm piggyback, magnaflow 2.25" cat back, kamikaze header with downpipe, intake short ram, and i can BARELY put up with a stock manual lancer just for a little while
it sux, but i will be getting turbo this december and ill put up with them just fine then..
so all that i listed will be for sale soon enough.
