knocking lifter??

I have about 6200+ miles on my car, have had it 6 mos. and got the oil changed at 1800 miles (because I was going on a 14 hour trip) and at about 5800+ miles. Anyway my problem is that I think I can hear a ticking coming from the left side of my engine. It sounds like a lifter, it idles rough when at a stoplight, and my neighbor said he thought he could hear a miss. Just want to know what your guys' take on this is. I'm going to take it to as soon as I get a chance but between school and work I don't really have much time.

oh, btw, I haven't really raced it and the second oil change I had them put the Castrol Syntec blend in it. Although I don't think that makes a difference since it started b4 my last oil change.

The entire Mitsu 4G9X engine line has always had a valve tick that just was one of their quirks. It may just be that and you may just be noticing it (I didn't even notice until one of the 'rage guys pointed it out to me). The rough idle though...hm...dunno. Like before, could just be you getting more accustomed to the car. Happened to me. Have you checked your oil level since the oil change and/or the trip? I always look for oil spots under my car the first week I change it and a big sheet of newspaper under your car really helps facilitate that.

Wow, didn't know about the tick in the 4G9X thing, but I'll check the oil level tomorrow and haven't seen any oil spots. I'm pretty good about looking for stuff like that cause I've had some pretty pos cars. I had them check the idle when I had my oil change but they siad it was @ 700rpms as to specs, but after that I noticed it doesn't idle rough until after I've moved it. Iguess I'll just have to take it in again and have them check it one more time.

Thanks

PJ is correct. It's more so on our engine and little on the 4g63T.

It will definately happen if you drop 0w30 into it. 10w30 should cure it, but it's not absolute. Also, you may have recently become more aware of it, just like finding a ding from an acorn.

BTW: ticking and missing are 2 different problems.

Castrol Syntec blend .. I'm not really jazzed on the oil. It's not below average product or anything. Regular Castrol is good and decent, but I stick with Mobil 1, either syth or blend or regular.

You may want to try to make your own blend.

I put 1qt of mobil 1 syth 0w30 and 3 qt of 10w30 or 0w30 + 3 qt of 5w30.

If roughing idle or so, chk air filter and plug connection. Crappy oil brand will do that to you too . . .

im sensitive about my car. Matter of fact the engine light wont shut off and it comes on again after 65 miles after ressetting it. just like clock work.

Im going in tommorrow and have it looked at,Ill let you all know whats up with it. It might give you insight on to why youres is doing the same thing

You didn't say you have a check engine light. Ticking can be also be set off by a faulty 2nd O2 sensor. Dumping rich will make your car tick even more than the last gen ticking escorts.

sometimes, my idle is at like 2k rpm, usually when it is cold out and (maybe or) the engine is still cold. what could cause this and is it bad?

It's fine. It's just doing an idle hunt. Someone posted up a good explanation once. It's nothing.

If your car is stock, start idle up to 2K rpm is pretty darn high. Now, if you hit +2200 rpm, I'll be worried.

1200-1400 rpm is average on cold start ups.

I didn't say my CEL was lit, that was somebody else.

My idle hits about 2000RPMs when I first start it when its cold, but drops down to about 1200 after a few seconds. Wouldn't that just be the choke?

my 2002 Es does that ticking thing & it is driving me nuts! It happens at about 1800 RPM. You guys think it is just the nature of the engine???

For the last time: Yes. If you actually read the thread cwest, both of your questions are answered.

it sounds like rubber on rubber whenever the engine "rocks" from a too-quick clutch engagement or when starting it.
