Figuring out rattling sound...
Maybe this was posted earlier but I have a problem and I hope you guys can help me.
There's a rattling or buzzing sound coming from the instrument panel area or steering column/brake/accelerator area. It seems to come on 5 minutes after driving the car.
When I'm at a red light, foot on the brake, the rattling begins. When I have my right foot just slightly resting on the accelerator, while the left foot is on the brake, the vibration stops. The car is on Drive but when I shift to P,N, 3rd and 2nd,nothing.
It also stops when I move the steering wheel side to side slightly while stationary.
I started noticing this a year after purchasing my car and the rattling has increased.
I have the automatic and my friend has a manual and we both have the same problem. We put our cars on the lifts and did an inspection under the cars.
We thought it could be one of the motor mounts. That was cleared. We checked the brake pedal assembly but that cleared.Someone said it may be the auto and manual transmission but we've had no problem with the auto's shifting nor with the manual's shift linkage or anything else that's tranny related.
Now we concluded it may actually be the air conditioner when the twin fans kick on in the radiator. Anyone else have this problem? I don't see it on ALLDATA's tech service bulletins on the Lancer. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Well, you've got an interesting one here. If it just happens when you press the brakes, that still doesn't tell much because it could be the vibration from the rotors causing rattling anywhere else in the car. But if it helps, here are some problems I have experienced or hear about before:
dashboard squeaks against windshield (remedy, give the dashboard a good shove)
steering column is coming loose (remedy, got column replaced under warranty)
something INSIDE the dashboard rattles (can't fix that, but either mine went away or I started tuning it out
and btw, I'm moving this to troubleshooting, and you'll notice that section has a thread dedicated to rattles. Read it and see if anyone else has addressed this issue as well. Thanks!

omg.. my car rattles up by the front of the windshield on the driver side. Its so annoying! The rattle happens when I'm at about 2k RPMs in every gear. (Manual Trans) Last week I noticed a little yellow plastic clip fell out between my feet under the pedals. I am assuming it came off of something that holds the upper-back of the dashboard on. I have been pushing on my dashboard and a-pillars, pushing my radar detector, and securing all loose objects in my car trying to figure out what it is. Tomorrow if it is still "warm" out (45 degrees), I'll try to find where the little yellow plastic clip fell from.
Ok.. i tried to find out where the little yellow plastic clip came from. I looked under my dashboard for about 20 mins and I have no idea where it fell from. I could tear apart my whole dash and find where it fell out from.. but if I got it back together it would probably rattle 3x as bad. lol. For now I'm just going to turn up the radio. I think the cold weather adds to the rattles, because in the summer everything expands and fits tighter. ^^
it could be your fan motor..i just got mine replaced...no more rattling..i had that annoying problem whenever i drive up to 3000rpm..etc.. it's still under warrenty.i ddint pay anything, they ordered it in and fixed it for me. Just give it a shot..
