WTF, now I hear a whirling noise, what could it be?

I did a search, but came up empty handed. On my way home from the dealer after getting this weird burning oil type smell diagnosed as nothing more then the crap they coat it with from the factory, I start to hear this whirling type noise above the sound of my radio, which wasn't turned up loud. Sounded sort of like the whirling noise one gets through speakers when the car isn't grounded well, but I turned off the radio completely, and still heard it. I even hear it while driving. I get almost home off the highway and pull into a drug store and start to try to hear where it is coming from. When I hit the power window switch to roll up, even though the windows are up, the sound goes away for a few seconds then comes back even while I am still holding the switch. I get out of the car and can hear it even louder and it is coming from under the car somewhere towards the front of the car. WTF?
I called the dealer and they tell me they touched nothing on the car and only sniffed for my weird smell. Any ideas what could be wrong now? They say they can't see me again until next Tuesday in the am or drop the car off, which won't work because it's the only car I have, and I work and they are way backed up on loaner cars.

The more and more I listen to the noise when it is there, which mysteriously isn't all the time, it sounds like it is coming from towards the rear of the car, almost like a fuel pump about to take a sh*t type of whirling sound.. I sit there in neutral, and rev the engine up and it doesn't get any louder, but when I let off the gas the noise goes away when the rpm's hit rock bottom for a second, but then when the idle rpm raises back to normal idle the sound comes back.

Managed to get to the dealer today and have them listen, and as I suspected it is the fuel pump making the noise, so they ordered a pump because they didn't carry them because they say they never had to change one in a Lancer because they never have problems with them. When he asked what am I going to do when the new one sounds like this since he said it is normal, I said bring it back and demand a fix, what else. He thinks the sound is normal, but over and above my radio I hear it, that's normal? LOL

I had the same noise this last weekend. Driving on the highway when i stopped at the rest area heard the whinning noise. when i got back in the car i just turned it on and listened and didnt hear anything until i started it and it came back. figured it was the fuel pump as well. i have a walboro 255 so i dont know. it was gone the next morning.

As far as going to the dealer. they think that every noise is normal, i swear they are the dumbest retards i have ever met. when they listened to the noise i have they told me it sounded like internal engine failure and then they kept it for 3 days and didn't do anything to it and then told me that the noise was normal. They would probably claim to know what piston return springs are if i asked them. They are dumb. So no i never got the fix i wanted and still hear the noise and i even went to mitsubishi and talked to the district manager and he said it was normal. so any noise is going to be normal to them. I would think that your motor could throw a rod and it would still sound normal to them.
