Gauge

I am attempting to install an oil pressure guage and I cant get it to read the pressure. Im not sure if I have the 3 wires connected correctly. There is a sender wire, an ignition switch (+) wire, and an engine ground wire. I know the sender wire is right and were pretty sure the ground is right. I connected the ignition wire directly to the pos. battery terminal and it peg the gauge. I guess my question is where should I tap for the ignition wire. Also does anyone know what stock oil pressure is, the gauge goes just past 100.

where did you tap in to. the stock sender should be right behind the oil filter. You could be on the wrong spot

the guage came with a sender unit that I installed in a port right above the oil filter.

are u positive u dont have the sender wire and positive wire mixed up? my a/f guage did this when i hooked it up and i had them 2 wires(positive and o2 wire)mixed up.

also, what brand of guage is it?

as for oil pressure, all i can tell ya is my dad likes to keep his chevelle at 40 when idling.

as for a power source, well, u can tap the ecu positive for power, or the radio, or u can hook up a cheap switch and mount it in the extra spot next to your dimmer<<(this is how i did mine)

no motion even when car is started?

where do u have it grounded? if it has a bad ground most guages either go full open or full off.

Update:

I ran the power through the + battery terminal and the ground off the negitive battery terminal. This causes the needle to spike all the way past 100 hundred. Does any one have any idea as to why?

Don't know what gauge/sender you have, but these are generally resistive senders that change resistance (w.r.t. ground) as pressure varies. You should never connect the sender wire to positive, and chances are that the gauge is now bad.

Here's a test -- positive to battery positive, negative to battery negative, then ground the sender wire. Does the needle move? After this, connect the sender wire to a 100-ohm resistor (radio shack) and the other end of the resistor to ground. Does the needle change? If not, your gauge is bad. If it does change, chances are that the sender is bad.
