I think the blower motor may be going... ***UPDATE***

...But I'm not completely sure. Anyways, I'm having issues with the HVAC system; in positions 1-3, no air is being ciculated through the system. However, at position 4, there is strong airflow, although I do hear a fairly loud whirring noise. The A/C works, as does the heat. Just not on positions 1-3. I think its the blower motor, but I'd appreciate any input all of you might have. And whatever the problem is, any install tips you could share would be tremendous. Thanks!

Eh, just my fiance. She likes to stay warm in winter, and cool in summer. I think she just needs to toughen up.

OK, so I visited my local "Mitsubishi dealer" (which really isn't anymore, but that's a whole other issue) and I have them check out the HVAC system. Thye take a look at it, and determine its a bad blower motor resistor, which I just replaced a couple weeks ago. They said they can fix it by soldering it, so I say, "Sure, why not?" Well, they solder it, I put it back in, and presto, the fan is working on all 4 speeds. That was Friday.

Today, Sunday, I go out, start up the car, turn on the fan, and..... NOTHING on positions 1, 2, or 3. But 4 works. Hell, I had the resistor out 4 worked, because its like a default or something. So now I'm stumped. I even checked all the fuses, and they all look good. I have not pulled out the resistor yet to check it out, I was just too frustrated. Any other direction I should be looking?

I don't think so, since both the heat and the A/C work, it's the fan that's problematic, or something between the switch on the dash and the fan. The fan runs at position 4 because its some kind of default; unless there's no fan, it will always work at 4. Damn I hate electrical problems.

the resistor they soildered is bad. The reason is coming undone is probably b/c of heat. did they replace it or just re-attach it ?

I have the same problem. My A/c and Heat only work on 4.
When I had taken it to the dealer they told me I had a bad resistor. I never had it fixed because, wow, they were charging me mad money. My warranty has been expired since forever as well.

Does your blower make funny noises too? Wow, everytime I start mine it screeches like crazy for a few seconds and then calms down. i've been meaning to have this fixed but no time. man, no time.

No, there's no weird noises just going on... Just thunderous silence. Until position 4, when I wonder if there's a turbocharger. And they just reattached it; the dealership could've ordered a new one, but it was over $70 through them. I bought a new one originally from mitsubishiparts.com, which was $55 plus shipping, but that one never worked. I probably should've sent it back, but since it's soldered, too late now. D'oh! There's not some special way the HVAC controls need to be set in order to install it, is there?

replace the a/c resistor
it has gone bad the only reason your ac works on setting 4
is because it by-pases the resistor on 4

heres my opinion, take it to a mechanic, if anyone on here is a mechanic and can tell what the problem is simply by what you typed, then they are the smartest person i know, other then that, take it in, us nobodies on the net aint gonna do jack

I literally just got my Lancer on Wednesday and I now have this problem, it's a used 2003 ES but nevertheless same problem. I called the dealership and they said the resistor is $115.00 plus labour. Boo!

I think maybe i'll take it to have it looked at to ensure this is the problem, but is this something I need to take it to Mitsubishi to fix or can I go to any menchanic who's not charging me 1 arm + leg just because their uniform says Mitsubishi on it?

Oh yeah, he also said "I've not changed a lot of these..." implying it's not a common problem or something, yet i've read quite a bit about problems with Mitsubishi HVAC controls...
