Not like you are going to get caught or anything or that the cops can tell you're doing it, but it really is illegal, and doesn't help at all in saving fuel, so what's the point? Unless you have the CVT like they said earlier, that slows the car down when not stepping on the gas.

I also think its in your learning to drive book somewhere not to do that. I noticed something today. I only noticed it since I am in Toronto I turned on the A/C and the car took a lot more effort from a stand still to move off it almost felt like the transmission had a break on it. I had to look down several times to make sure my hand brake was not armed . Has anyone else had this feeling..

Do you think we're all just lying to him? Like a big conspiracy or something?

Yes, it is illegal.

ii doubht ur saving any gas, and poping ur tranny in drive while coasting is just like revin ur engine and slapping it in drive, ur (tanny engages and needs to go form a 0 setting to X amount km instantly) CVT sensors need time to calculate the amount of torque needed to adjust the Variable ratio. Your killing your car everyday buddy

A few little comments/questions.

Dont put your car into 6th to coast, you actually have a better coasting gear ratio with it in D. After taking a long trip up to orlando and wasting more gas because i left my car in 6th while cruising at 85 i noticed that if you put it into drive it drops the RPMs another ~500. So if you want to get real technical about coasting/gears, theres 1-6 manual and then consider D as 7th gear since you can get a higher(or lower, whatever makes it less rotations) ratio using that.

Other than that little tid bit someone made mention to the "It feels like a break is on" with the CVT. I have to say i have experienced this quite a few times when you put your foot to the floor and the car doesnt go ANYWHERE and i have to let off the gas and pretend i was trying to go slow from a start... cause thats just horrible to go from your car moving like 5mph across to intersection to some crazy acceleration. I've also found that it picks up/catches when you dont floor it, or when you just gradually put it down.. Or when this happens if you let off a bit itll "catch" and start to accel better. Grrr how i cant stand feeling like im driving through tar when i go to accel, thats the best way to explain it... it feels like the car is stuck to the road.

IMO i think the fluctuation/lack of acceleration is pretty dangerous if you really need to floor it and get out of a situation and your car cant even get out of its own way.... Anyone else have this problem? i know it was discussed in another thread but has anyone come up with a technical solution other than the throttle sensor sucks ***?

Dont do it, its not really needed, to some degree the engine doesnt not employ as much engine breaking as a traditional manual tranny does.

its a good trick for standard trannies but here its not needed. As for the act of doing it. my guess would be since their are variable bands involved there wouldnt be much wear and tear due to stress so long as you match the proper rev range up before you switch back to D. So tap the gas and tap it back to D at 2000 - 2500. the Car can sense the speed and the proper gear.

It occurred to me today that this makes perfect sense. Manual mode has preset "gearing" levels. D mode is CVT. The whole point of CVT is to be able to vary the "gearing" as needed. So of course the D mode gives you a better gearing! The car is able to max out the setting because it knows you're coasting.
