ways to prevent/cover up rust?

i was getting out of my lancer today, only to see that i have nickel/quarter sized rust spot where my door closes, im so angry. but is there anyway to prevent it from spreading since winter is coming up? also is there a way to cover it up and protect further rust?

sand the rust away a bit, then put some primer on it, then when that dries, use touch up paint with the correct color

you could try a rust dissolver but keep in mind that if you get it on paint it will strip it right off. I like Naval Jelly cuz its thicker so it doesn't run as much on vertical applications etc...

Also make sure that (if possible) you check the other side of the sheet metal. In some cases the rust could have started on the opposite side of what you are seeing, and any attempts to fix it could be in vain. Get all that you can, or like cancer it will spread.
