Thin paint?

Ok my car has 5000 miles and these pictures show the result of the first snowfall my car has been in. No I didnt use an Ice scraper, in fact I didnt even touch the hood. The snow slid off the hood... and not while driving...while I was cleaning the car in the morning. I am meticulous with the care of my car. I wash and polish it every week so it has nothing to do with carelessness. What a way to start off the day...

Am I crazy to think this is not normal? Ive had crazy ice on my previous cars and crazy storms and weather with no scratches ever.

Looks like either someone key'd your car or you were behind a gravel truck running down the freeway! Sorry man...

Ok, that would make sense had my car been on the road or behind a gravel truck or if there was some psycho who loved to make perfectly straight scratch marks for no reason.. those are good examples of things that can scratch paint, BUT this was from hard snow sliding off, i saw it happen right in front of me ! I know its hard to believe but thats what happened! Here is what happened. Parked car in backyard with pretty paint, snow starts falling, I leave to Bermuda for the weekend. I come back, car has snow on it I wake up to go to work, I start cleaning windows, snow on hood slides off, I look over at hood and there are marks. FROM THE SNOW SLIDING OFF. and no I did not remove snow with scraper, I didnt even get to the hood when it slid off.

I dont think it was snow sliding off. I would bet that it was a sheet of ice. but even so, ice shouldnt do any damage. Call mitsu and your dealer and let them know its unacceptable. For future reference. dont crack ice that is sitting on ur paint. It will crack your paint along with the ice because the surface of the paint is so cold.

I jacked up the paint on a few of my old cars doing that, which proves that (A) You're right and (B) I'm a slow learner

yeah it wasnt soft snow, it was wet and hard, most likely iced underneath. I never cracked it off. I had the car running while I was cleaning windows. That when I heard hood it slide off the hood. The paint is definetely not cracked it is scratched. In any case its never happened to any of my cars that have endured worse in the past.

lol well i will tell you what the dealer is going to say, lol you drove off the lot, the car looked fine, you drive back and that happens? they are going to say not our problem. If you owned the dealer i am sure you would say the same thing. But if they are willing to play ball with you, they may try to recreate your sitution. Keep the car over night with ice on the hood, and shoving the ice off, if it creats the same lines, then you have a claim, if not , your own your own.

But to be honest, there must be more too it, because the lines are two straight in order for it to be thin paint. paint would come off in patchs or random lines.

Maybe you should look into getting a nice CF hood ?

there is nothing more too it, why would it need to be random to be thin paint? the ice slid down along the length of the hood, hence the straight lines. I wasnt driving when it fell off.

I only question thin paint because I keep the car clean and polished and Ive never had my other cars scratch from ice.

realistically the dealership is going to laugh at me because they wont believe it anyways. Theyve already implied the use of a scraper (Im not stupid enough to do that, Ive dealt with show cars so I know proper care of paint)

anyone who knows me knows my obsession with paint care so its not a matter of neglect. If there truly is something wrong with the paint, Im sure other people will come forward with complaints soon.

If I hadnt seen the ice slide of with my own eyes I wouldve though it was something else but the slab slid off, crashed to the ground in a slushy mess and left fresh scratches on the hood. Ice SHOULD NOT do that. Cant wait to see what happens afetr 2nd snowfall

Maybe you had dirty or maybe a tiny bit of sand under the ice . And yes the paint on the lancer is thin , it does not forgive .

i have also bad experiences with the paint and the only thing that touches my paint is a microfiber wash mitt or a microfiber cloth and just the other day ive noticed little brown rust spots on the side of my car. i will try and remove them in the spring with some paint cleaner or a clay bar but it looks to me that the paint is stained and they aren't going to go away and im wondering if the mitsubishi corrosion warranty will cover it.

thats break pad dust sticking on the paint and rusting , that can be removed with certain products .

BTW, anytime you have ice or snow on your car, do not let it slide off... If there is even the tiniest specs of gravel, salt, or other crud from the road on there, your hood will look like the above pics... Its just like using a dirty rag to wash the car...

Its most likely just scratches in the clear coat, take it to a detailer, they can usually buff it out...

BTW, the dealer is not going to give .02 cents worth of care... Mitsu's paint is known for the suck, get used to it...
