Exclamation Serious electrical problems

My girlfriend and i recently purchased a 2003 lancer oz rally edition with 76k on it and within 1 week this is what has happened and what i have done: Thre stereo stopped working (aftermarket kenwood) checked fuses ALL were good, checked and double checked ALL grounds with test light (including ground from deck to chassis) pulled the stereo found that i had full time (memory) power but no acc. power with key on. Thought maybe the keyed ignition would be faulty. Cig lighter only comes on with key on, ive got power there. That means the keyed ignition is not faulty. Today, the power door locks, dome light, and brake lights quit working and ive lost full time power to the stereo. The power door locks work when the key is on, but not off. The only thing i havent checked is the relays, but i have no clue which relay does what. Also ive heard there is a computer board that controls the dome light, could this have something to do with this? All circuits have failed at about the same time. My gf is going nuts, which in turn, is driving me nuts. Please someone help, i also signed up on mitsubishi-forums.com but no help there

You said you checked the fuses right? You checked the ones under the hood as well as the ones by your legs right?

Have you checked the battery by any chance? The only reason I ask this is because my mother-in-law's car the battery was low and she was not getting any accessories with the car off. Like dome light didn't turn on, and the door locks did not work but she also has a Chrysler.

I am pretty sure someone with more knowledge will get on and help out.

Well i know the battery is toast, it barely holds a charge. But, when the car is running, its running off the alternator. So that doesnt explain why the stereo doesnt work, or the brake lights. This is all related somehow, i just dont know how and im going crazy, seriously. This is what i do for a living, and im stumped. Ive heard this cars have ****ty wiring, i just didnt know HOW ****ty. Also, it DOES have an aftermarket security system in it. But it works, and i dont see how it could be ties in with anything going on here.

Might need to replace a bad Ecu . Either the Ecu under the fuse box in the engine bay or the Ecu under the steering wheel for the dome light and other features . The one in the engine bay controls the outside lamps thought .

I actually have an extra one of those i can sell you .

Also check your fuses again for the stereo fuse and dome light the fuse is in the engine bay but it is in a small yellow case so you would have to pop the fuses out of it . Also check the 10amp fuses in the engine bay for the rest of the lights that have gone out .

in the underhood fuse box pop it open and you'll see a yellow cap with 2 fuses in it , pull up on it but dont try and force it outta the box , grab a small screwdriver and pry the 2 lil clips out while pulling it up theres 2 fuses in there one is for the radio , I bet its blown ....keep in mind this fuse also supplies power to the dome light and the high beam indicator on the dash along with fuse #18 in the underhood box

also whether the alarm is good or not the install is questionable especially if the previous owner installed it, find the fuse for it and take it out ....

I doubt its the etacs ecu , the fuse would go 1st

Ive worked on hundreds of them and never seen a wiring issue that wasnt owner inflicted ..lol

Could someone take a picture of the underhood fuse box and post it here by chance?? Im not seeing any small yellow "cap" with 2 fuses in it. I do see the big ECU fuse, and since my brake lights dont work, would that one be tied in to it? I have to look under the steering column to find the other one later today.......

As for the security alarm i can see the fuses for it by the driver side kick panel, there are two. Taking them out will disable the security system with no bad effects just for testing?

The high beam indicator is not coming on on the dashboard, and the door chime thing isnt working either, i think were on to something here guys!! Why the heck would the power door locks just stop working with the key off, but work with the key on, that worries me.

I had a similar problem , all of a sudden my turn signals stopped working , and I pulled the fuse and looked at it , it was fine so I stuffed the fuse back in there and wa la everything started working... basically the cause being corosion/dust no getting a good connection on the wire ends , you may pull them all out and put die electric grease on everything ....

I dont know where the "yellow thing" is. Anyone got a picture by chance, or ill take a picture of my fuse box and maybe someone can point it out to me, it IS in that box tho right? Theres only one yellow thing i see in there and its the 40amp ignition fuse, and its good.

Just wanted to recap here real quick of everything that is not working:

No power to stereo
No brake lights (tail lights work)
Trip odometers A and B reset on there own when car is turned off
High Beam indicator doesnt come on now
Door Chime
Clock
Dome light
Power door locks only work with ignition turned on now

Im almost ready to take it to a mitsu dealer, but that cost big money i dont have.
I do know they can plug into the car and see if the ETACS ECU is toast. The front ECU should be good if my exterior lights are working, and all fuses are for sure good, other than the "yellow cap" one i cant seem to find. The car is undrivable now because of the brake lights not working, which is a real bummer.

Found where the "yellow cap" thing is supposed to be, it looks like someone removed the yellow cap and threw it away. They are 2 10amp (which are good) fuses and you can see in the under hood fuse box where it would have that yellow cap covering them by the notches beside the two. Taking it down to my buddy at satch works today or tomorrow to have the ECU's checked following the diagnostic tree in the FSM that senate posted.

I have the exact same issue. Did you fine out what was wrong and has it been fixed please? If so, what needed to be done.

Cheers

Read the post above yours, he states someone removed the "Yellow" cap area where fuses should be. Try looking there.
