2002 Lancer heat control unit bad?

Hello, I just bought this Lancer and I noticed that the control dial you use to choose defrost, air at feet, etc. only goes halfway and it where it does go, it doesn't change the route of the air. In other words it comes out at face level only no matter what I do with the dial. Also the far left dial, the one where you choose how cold or hot it blows does not seem to allow hot air to come through. It is set on cold. Finally, at idle the A/C doesn't seem to work. It only works consistently when the car is at speed. I am at a loss. Any advice? Thanks!

The knobs do break fairly easily. There are updated parts available from mitsu, that don't use the crimp-happy cables I think...I still need one for my temp knob. As far as the hot/cold, that could be 2 things. 1, the knob is busted and stuck on cold, but you may also have an issue with the A/C and it not working while idle. That could be loose belt, or "other" like...bad compressor or whatever, but maybe not.

Don't crank on the knob too hard. It was a technical service bulliten to replace the gears for the knobs. It reduces how hard you need to turn on the knob. I got the parts from Mitsubishi for around $25 - they also have other parts in the TSB but you need to remove the dashboard to change the stuff out. More than I wanted to handle. Don't break the knob linkage then you have to replace the whole in dash unit for a ridiculous amount of money.

Right...pre- "break", it's under 50 bucks in parts, post "break" a shop will charge you like 1grand, since you have to drain the A/C and take the whole lil' heater core apart.
