P0340 pd code...help :(

I have a 2002 oz rally lancer

And it just quit on me while driving. Battery okay. Engine turns over. When I ran my diagnostic tool on it it read P0340 pd which is "camshaft position sensor circuit malfunction bank A." Now I've replaced the sensor and I'm still stuck in the same spot. Has anyone had a similar problem? Any help and advice would help.

you cleared the code when you replaced the sensor, right?

oh man.. i just had an ordeal with my crank position sensor. motor was hesitating shifting into third gear and was dieing on the freeway but wasnt get any kind of code for a while. Then today the motor starts to buck and hesitate and finally the service engine soon light appears and low and behold its the crank position sensor. I drove my car to an fro the autozone. Solved my problem though. No more hesitatin! i would clear the codes if you havent done already for your cam position sensor and if it still returns i would look at the wiring going to the sensor to ake sure that its all intact and insulated. Knowing my luck the next thing to go out on my car would probably be the cam position sensor.

car cranks and engine turns over but the engine wont ignite. It just keeps turning but it won't catch on.

take the upper timing cover off and make sure the camshaft is moving when you crank it...lol, sounds silly, but it's worthwhile making sure it's not a machanical failure...

I will put money his timing belt broke or stripped the teeth although im thinking positive it isnt . Especially makes me think this as it just quit while driving. I've seen this a few times they tell me cam sensor code popped up and needs changed, it just cranks. . As soon as I hear it crank I can tell no compression and so pull that upper cover and yup no spinny cam lol.

I have had a very similar problem. It began with a little trouble starting, nothing too major, but it kept getting worse. Eventually, it would crank and crank but never start. Once in a while it would randomly start, and once it finally did, it would run like a dream until I shut it off. Then it was a crap shoot to see if it would start again. I got P0340, replaced the Cam Position Sensor, erased the codes, reset the ECU, and it still won't start. The code P0340 came up again.

What do I do know?!

Yes your timing belt is spinning properly. I would start by lining up the timing marks and let us know if they are correct. Could have possibly jumped a time slightly.

Update: The timing is fine. I was kinda baffled because it seemed like the problem got worse after I changed the sensor out. Before it would at least start sometimes, but after it wouldn't start at all. I think the sensor that I got from Advance Auto was bad. I put the old sensor back in and it started up first try and the code went away. I guess I will have to try to convince them that the sensor they gave me was bad. I am back to square one!

I'll report back when I get another new sensor.

Now I'm really stuck...

I got another Cam position sensor from Advance and put it in, and nothing. Still the same problem, crank but no start. Same code. Then I put in the old sensor, started up first try and several times after.

What does this mean? If it was anything other than the Camshaft position sensor, wouldn't it have the same problem with or without the new sensor?

My only guess is that the advance auto parts warehouse has a bad run of sensors from Beck/Arnley and both of the sensors were bad. That or UPS shook the packages so that they broke the sensors. I am going to try a junk yard. Any other suggestions? Autozone doesn't carry the part.
