Must I have a scanner to read error codes?

Brand newbie here, so be gentle. I seem to have a sensor or electrical problem in my 2008 GTS. Tired of paying a ton and taking the shop's word for it on what error codes were stored. (and it's an hour away) Is there a better way to do this? Aftermarket scanners or anything else? It's currently really screwed up so any help would be appreciated.

you will be able to read the codes and then search them to find out what they mean
