Cranked it over by hand a couple rotations and those were the only ones with play throughout each stroke, they stiffened up about halfway through but then back to having play. So i took the rail and rockers off and felt the cam to check for grooves or chunks missing, everything felt smooth, so im leaning even more towards the lifters now

if none of the other came loose at all (I'm talking .008-.012), through I think 6 rotations, then you have a problem....which is your valves may be sticking open...but if that were the case, you would have had poor compression...and that would have led us to this conclusion sooner...cylinder one, may just be very loose, and would cause an awful racket, but it's adjustable...adjust it and carry on.

oh right...sorry, I'm thinking of 4G6 engines...it's been a while now since I had my 2003 ES...

you can however, bleed or replace the lash adjusters...but the thing about that is, that will cause excessive noise but should not affect engine operation...

So, should i just go on the hunt for a head and call it a day, this is seeming like too much chance at this point, there's also a salvage yard by me that my dad used to do business with when he had a shop, they have an oz with a motor that only has 90k miles (compared to my 163k , much better) its starts and runs good and they take it out for me for only 500 , only thing is I've never taken a motor out of a car, so not very confident of my ability to do that alone even though everyone is telling me it's easier than all the other work I've done, like the oil pump, which seemed pretty straightforward
