First off, the R32 is not a girls car. Anyone that claims so has not driven one with suspension and a chip, or probably at all. The car is capable of 170 MPH (http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2058543) with slight mods, and I won many auto-x events with the R. BUT, the EVO was more my cup of tea so after a year I traded her in for a 05 EVO VIII for raw power, handling and tunabilitiy. I'm fairly young, there will be plenty of time for luxury when I'm older.
Smithy, good move for your current priorities, you are going to Love the R32 and never look back.

I never really thought of the GTI or R32 as a girls car. I must be getting old because I remember when tuner cars started showing up I thought they were homosexuals coming out of the closet or something. I mean they had big wings, crazy paint and fancy rims. The first word to come to my mind was flamboyant.
former vw golf owner. had a 1.8t and loved it. love the r32 actually looked for one b4 i got the evo, only drawback is the power. i was going to get one and i wanted to put a single T04 on it intercooled and its a lot of money. o one other thing i hate about the R, the clutch, feels like a feather. other than that vw a4 golfs will always be my favorite car.
Congrats on the new ride.
Like most people in this thread "with any knowledge on the topic" know both cars are really nice rides. EVO = raw power, great track car right out of the box. R32 = a great refined daily driver, with potential to be a great track car.
In any case I just wish I had the $$ to afford both.

Circling the skidpad, the car (r32) holds on for 0.89 g, right there with the Evo and STi's 0.90 g. I'm sticking to my claim, same tires very close. In noway do I drive hard enough on the street to do a real comparision. But should anyone? I'm going by the way I drive and the articles I've read by the professionals.

Skid pad, slalom, all those magazine tests are great for print articles but useless when it comes to turning faster lap times. Make no mistake, the Evo will leave the R32 behind on the track where all of the single tests are merged into one event.
R32 is a more refined approach to a fun, sporty AWD vehicle. I just wish it had more power, if it did I would have considered it vs. the Evo.

does the r32 stop as hard? does the r32 transition as well... and the r32 definitely doesn't steer as precisely, and it doesn't turn in as well either. so what do you mean by handling? until you push an r32 and find it sloppy all over hte sodding place you're not gonna see that pushing an evo is a bar above.
