Great. Now explain how the Yugo comment applies to the R32. It doesn't, as far as I can tell. Did Yugo sell 5000 without any advertising? Was there a big preview in Europe with many press representatives in attendance?

I'm confused.

The R32 is a nice car. No doubt. But you can't compare it to an EVO. It's apples and oranges. Different target markets.

Audis and VWs are some of the most finnicky freakin cars to work on! More so than beemers. Actually, NEW VWs and Audis is what I meant.

Just an example. There is a service bulletin out to all smog stations about VWs with aftermarket stereos that says "DO NOT SMOG" if vehicle has an aftermarket stereo. Can and has caused smog machine to crashed and terminally shut down. ...or something along those lines. My boss almost killed me for trying to hook up the Snap-On scanner to a girl's Jetta with a Sony deck. Just 1 example, there are more.

R32 Golf's are brilliant cars. They are the hottest small hatch out there. Who can imagine that its got a 3.2 litre v6 under the bonnet. hehe its a crackup. Ive seen some videos on the nurburgring and they got the attitude. They got an awesome exhaust note. Have you guys seen the tuned R32 from EIP TUNING. I got a video of it on the dyno. Pushes out 600whp. Screams hardcore. Here's the video.

OR

http://www.eiptuning.com/eip/video.html and download the first video with the blue r32 on the dyno.

first i never compared an yugo with an r32. i said there is a reason yugos are rare. if you are drawing a connection between a yugo and your car something about it must be on your mind.

dammit man. if your happy with your car be happy with it. but dont come around here trying to garner appriciation on an evo forum.

Glad to see some Aussie's on the forum. Amazing Country btw. Well I'm glad I brought some emotions too the table. One thing for sure, everyone has an opinion and thats what makes you guys who you are if we all liked the same thing we would be bland and boring. So I respect the hardcore evo guys. I respect the hardcore r32 guys. And I give the most respect to those who appriciate both.

I personly love the R32. I got a slight fetish for hatches, and VW is the only company still making decent hatches.

The only reason I dont own one is cause of 7k-22k for a turbo? If im gonna have 50k invested in a car it will be German and made in Stuttgart

Hey-I just sold my R32 for a 05 EVO VIII. I moderately modded (suspension, haldex, CAI, APR tuning, Koseis w/ R-compounds, exhaust...etc) my R32 and tracked it at Gingerman and Grattan Raceway 4 times this season.
The primary reason I switched was to get the extra space for my 2 growing girls' legs (I'm 6'2", which doesn't leave much romm behind me in the R32). The secondary reason was the experience I had at Grattan on October 8th.
I drove my little R32 within an inch of its life and run 1:32. I'm not the smoothest driver and sometimes have unique line choices, but I was holding my own in the advanced run group. A silver very heavily modded 03 EVO VIII was the only car just slightly pulling on me (I couldn't hang with him on 2 areas of the track-both accelerations out of turns going uphill). Other than that, the R32 was right there!
My brother in law was there with his 03 EVO VIII, and he let me run a few laps with it-as I was very interested in a comparison. I ran consecutive laps of 1:35, 1:34, and 1:33. I then pulled off as I didn't want to brutalize his tires (not R-compounds) any more. I could have pushed it harder...
The cars are very different both in power delivery and handling characteristics. The R32 has wonderful torque all over the place and pulls like a little bulldog out of the corners. There obviously is no FI, however, and it shows as you try to get it up to higher speeds (not slow, just not as fast as the EVO). The EVO always has to stay in boost or I feel like I'm in a stock civic (easy to stay in boost at the track-of course I had a RX8 before the R32, which only has power above 5K!). However, everytime that turbo spooled up, my ***** just warmed right up in delight. I realized right there I might have a problem (with my wife trying to explain another new car). That damn power is just plain fun!!
The handling and the cars ability to put power to the ground is just as different. The R32 is quite "flickable" around S turns and corners well considering it's portly weight. But it isn't as firmly sprung as the EVO and it rolls more and just feels less planted when you take it to it's limits. The EVO, while much harsher on the street, just feels like a scalpel dissecting every turn. It inspires complete confidence even near the limit. The steering is much quicker and provides better feedback. Furthermore, the EVo puts the power to the ground much more authoritatively. I would often get excessive inside front tire wheelspin in the R32. In the EVO, it just clawed in and went (and that was an 03 EVO-can't wait until May to try out my 05 with the LSD-I'll be looking for 1:30 at Grattan with minimal mods).
Damn-long first post. Anyway-both great cars. Honestly, if I just drove on the street and didn't need 4 doors, I'd have an R32. At the track I'd always take the EVO. Track plus my kids and I have my black 05 GSR!!

Hello to all fellow EVO owners

Johannes

oh yeah-I also drove my other brother in laws 05 STI at Grattan that day, but that's another story!

My experience with VW. I had a 2001 GTI VR6. I loved the car, but after getting to know my service advisor personally, I realized that reliability is not one of the German company's strong points. My sis also had a 2001 Jetta and she was at the dealer more than me. After taking into account the added stress of AWD with the R32, I felt that VW did not have it in them. Their cars are simply not reliable. The fit and finish is superb and initial quality fantastic, but after that, you end up driving a rental more than your actual car. Two thumbs down for VW.

Congrats bro I recently traded mine in for the evo, the R32 is a real nice car. The germans make some nice dubs, the only reason I got rid of mine was the need for a 4 door. I owned a 01 1.8t then the R get on vwvortex they are great guys/gals Ill pose a pic of my previous one.

So what does this mean: "Yugos are pretty rare too. There is a reason." You wrote that, correct? Please explain. That's all I was after. What's that reason and what does it have to do with this thread?

You're way off base, too. I'm not trying to "garner appreciation" from anyone. I'm just trying to understand what you wrote because it made no sense in the context of this discussion.

Furthermore, if certain Evo owners can't appreciate other cars, no matter what they may be, then how can they be car enthusiasts? It doesn't work that way. If I drove a Camry, I'd still hold the same position.
