Disappointed with the Shelby GT500
First off my guess is the GT 500 along with SRT 8, upcoming Camaro and Challenger are targeting the Baby Boomer generation that grew up driving the original muscle cars back in the 60’s and early 70's. They are trying to relive there youth. Only thing is they want a softer ride, updated amenities and also want big HP numbers and legendary engine names and badges like Hemi, 427 etc. etc and so far they are all heavyweights! Around 4000lbs. Look at what the originals are bringing at auctions. BIG DOLLORS!! Somebody’s buying them and it sure isn’t low to middle income young people.
Also to compare the new Mustang to a C 6 or Z06 is not fair, after all the C 5R and C6R Vette has proven itself to be a flat out winning platform on road courses and has beaten the best that Europe as thrown at them. Yes they can get down the ¼ mile quickly and with simple upgrades make some serious HP, but it is not a MUSCLE CAR. To most people it is a sports car.
Compare the Mustang to the other cars in its class and it is right there. I’m sure that Ford will come out with an R version or something like that which will be lighter and set up better for tracking and as someone posted the GT 500 will take to mods very easily. I know for a fact that GM will offer another version of the regular Z06 with like 600+hp coming out some time next year (not Blue Devil) and GM performance will offer upgrades for the 505 hp Z to bring it up to the same numbers for those that choose to. (Inside information from the people that were approached to develop a new exhaust for GM. I guess the one they are using on the current Z with the vacuum system doesn’t work well with the 600+hp).
The Evo, Sti etc. are sort of our muscle cars. Fast, fun, handle great and are a little easier on the wallet.
Sorry for the long thread guys.

The ford needs to go on a diet...But if it does...You better watch your asses cuz that thing is a monster under the hood. All mustangs are pretty damn heavy, but they are pretty heavy with 300 hp instead of 500hp. All this thing needs is a weight reduction big time and i wouldnt be suprised if someone went with a fiberglass body and ripped out the useless crap and ran 10's. That is for the racing mind...As far as fords mind, whos the biggest buyer of brand new mustangs especially $40,000 ones...Older middle age men who want the luxeries and the speed. The only difference is that to hit tens it wouldnt take nearly as much money for that car as it would an evo. Shoot most people spend 10,000 or so easy on their evo trying to make it run under tens.

With a set of drag radials and a 1.9 60' this car will go 11.8 with just 2 tires as mods. Throw on an ET street and you're talkin' 11.6-11.7 WITH JUST 2 TIRES. A pulley and catback and the car will go 11.3-11.4. I don't understand why people are complaining.
The car is a couple hundred pounds too heavy, but who cares....it's a street car -- a very fast street car. Just me, these cars will dominate the street.

haha its electronically limited in 5th at 150.....what about 6th gear... you guys are missing the big picture, this car could easily hit 200 with some slight mods.. I mean jeez even the exhaust is limited because out of the factory it has to meet certain specifications such as emissions, not to mention the fact that it is already supercharged, so run it a little higher psi and this thing is a beast...Id take it over an evo any day.

Don't you just love dealer price ajustments
I wouldn't pay a penny over MSRP.

A little comparison he got a 12.2@117mph out of the GT500 and 12.8@112 out of the 03/04 cobra, so there is no doubt that the GT500 is much faster.
There are few issues besides weight except the ultimate rear tire size and the strength of the rods. The Mcdonald's sized weight gain sucks, but it will make for one nice street car, not roadcourse car and it will be fast. How fast we will have to see.
I dunno I'm still partial to the older 5.0 fox bodies *considering I have one* I know more baby boomers that would love to have a 1991 GT / LX fox then have the newer body, simply because its faster and lighter.
The problem with the testing that the major magazines do is that they dont use a set location for all there tests. If you look at the gt500 test in motor trend it was done in irvine california on the old marine base airstrip, which I have driven on and it is a cracked up old dusty airstrip. Its not even close to as good as the roads around here. So you cant compare the numbers they get there to numbers from a prepared drag strip. In Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords they did one 12.2 and consistent mid 12's back to back with no time in between runs. The car is fairly impressive, especially when people add slicks and some normal bolt ons. I wouldnt be suprised to see 10's with very few mods.
