GTI MKV reliability...good or bad?

I am currently looking to get another car as a daily driver, but at the same time a fun car, with nice interiors, exterior, etc. I have never owned a hatch so i started my search and decided to go to my nearest VW dealer to check out the new GTI.....and i love the car...its an awesome ride....very nice all around.

But the problem i have with it its reliability....is it good or bad?....on the vw vortex forums they said is made in Germany , so is supposed to be better than the MKIV

Any one owns a GTI around here?.....sure i can go and ask to the vw vortex guys, but they might be biased on there response

Thanks in advance

My brother has a MKV GLI and has not had a single issue with it. Overall the MKV is significantly more reliable than the MKIV.

Consumer Reports maybe rating it pretty good this time around. I'm not liking the
FWD thingy though . But for a DD I say go for it. Also try the DSG in one. The
votex lower valance kit does wonders too(not sure on some of the spelling).
GOOD LUCK

I didnt find any good info on reliability in CR since the car is new and they didnt have enough data, so my search continues

The one i drove had DSG and it was a blast to drive, but i dont think i can deal with it since i really like manual transsmision cars...maybe is a matter of getting used to it, who knows

Anyway, thanks for the input guys

I purchased a "Fast" last year and loved it. It was an awesome car, all around. Great handling, great low end torque and very respectable gas mileage. Gotta love the FSI. Ended up trading that in for the 2006 Passat 2.0T due to child on the way Good luck!

With their proven track record of horrible reliability issues I can't believe anyone would ask this question. They just came out, give it a year and everyone will have issues again. They said they fixed reliability with the third gen, then with the fourth gen, etc. See a pattern?

Go drive a MazdaSpeed 3. Same price and it will run circles around a GTI. The interiors are awesome and they are super reliable. My wife has a 05 Mazda 3S and we have never had a single problem with the car. I wasn't too impressed with them until we drove one, they are clearly light years ahead of any other car in the daily driver class.

i agree... me and my family were long time vw owners, but not anymore because of the reliability problems. However i cannot speak for the mkV's. Stick around vwvortex and you will learn a lot about them and see if any issues come up

+1 on checking into the mazdaspeed3

I've been daily driving mine without it being in the mech shop. Roughly 13000 miles I think. Stock tires wore rapidly though(225/40/18 conti2 I think).
I opt for the 6speed manual instead of the DSG. DSG would be cool to have though.

No, I don't see a pattern. What I see is your pattern of smack talk. Can you please explain me what pattern are you talking about? I have a GTI MKIII and a GLI MKV and I am trying to figure out what "horrible" reliability track issues you heard.

I am listening.. please explain since you are the one that started it.

Carlos

The GTI MKV with DSG is probably your best bet for a DD, and you can find one for under $24k without options. It is bulletproof reliable and it has great gas mileage considering is a 200hp 2 liter turbo. Excellent choice

He drives a Evo, dude, why would he want to buy a Mazdaspeed3 which is very close in performance to the Evo? Yes, the Mazda is faster than the GTI (duh! 265bhp vs 201) but not by a huge margin: 14.0 @ 101mph vs. 14.5 @ 95 mph...you call that "running circles around a GTI"? $400 in mods will put the GTI in the same league with the Mazdaspeed3 at 260bhp. And how can you tell that the Mazdaspeed3 is "super reliable"??? It was just released a few months ago! Talking about being biased... You also forgot to mention the looks: the Mazda is plain fugly, specially when compared with the well proportioned and classy GTI.

...and no, I don't drive a VW.

My friend has a 07 GTI..its a fun car and handles really well...I like the steering wheel controls and the info center between the speedo and tach. Its a nice car all around and I would say go for it even though you have to run 92 octane or better..
