If you want to know more, check out the 2 biggest Porsche forums there are, rennlist.com and renntech.org. The watercooled 996's did get a bad rap from all the RMS rear main seal issues. Updates included about 4 different p/n's for seals throughout years 00-04 and still going. The tool just set the seal 5mm deeper into the crank. The issue was the weight of the crank constantly wearing on the 6 o'clock position of the seal, that and a bit of a line bore problem and a go no-go gauge to test blocks that came in for constant RMS problems. And there were some that required new engines if the leak couldn't be fixed, or didn't pass the gauge test.

99-01 were 3.4's with about 300 hp. They also blew their guts out and cracked cases when the intermediate shaft siezed and the engine kept running although not for long. More than one Taco bell drive through had 9 quarts of synthetic on the parking lot. That issue was updated on the 3.6 2002 cars which had better interiors and cupholders. Like others said, get the 02, it also had approx 320 hp. Trans on all the cars seem to be good, no problems or recalls. A few 02-03 had some RMS issues, once in a while intermediate shaft problems but only a few compared to the crap load that are running now. Plus lots of intermediate shaft problems were from Boxsters, and there were a ton of those sold that did have problems that probably don't help the reputation of the 996 as many people lump the Boxster 3.2 or 2.7 in the same group as the 3.4 996 engine. I know many people with 3.4 engines that have good luck, but I know many more that have those cars that have bought engines than the 02- people. Of course higher mile 02- cars might prove otherwise in time.

Zenon lights are kick *** on those 02- cars. The updated front end which was really only noticeable in the headlight area was a huge improvement for the 02- cars. No more orange or clear like lower lens on the headlights. You can put a huge variety of lower spoilers on them, a few OEM but mostly aftermarket. Same for the rear but OEM body parts like that are way too high priced for rear spoilers.

Porsche made a quarter inch thick roll of rubber sponge like material. Gave it a part number and used it on recalls for that exact window squeaking issue another guy mentioned. Stopped squeaks and rattles from the windshield area. Not used on 02- cars though, later 996's weren't prone to needing that.

That's about all the major things I can think of, and as another guy said, maintenance parts are not as high priced as you may think. Competition for parts is fierce in the Porsche parts business too.

I've went from SupraTT to a 996TT and i would never look back. The cost of maintaining the 996TT is on par with the SupraTT. My current 996TT was built by Switzer Performance (www.switzerperformanceinnovation.com). I'm sure Tym/Switzer is pretty well known on the Evo/DSM boards. These cars are built proof and makes gobs of power.

As far as looks, to each its own. I think only the 996TT/GT2/GT3 looks great, the N/A 996 do look boring (even the 997s).

The best thing about 996TT is that they've dropped in price dramatically due to the economy. I think its the perfect time to snag one up. I've seen CLEAN ones go for as low as $35k. Thats the same price as a EVOX. I would rather be driving an 02 996TT than a new EvoX.

Cheers
Paul

It's 3.6 for the 2001 turbo engine case which is quite a bit different than the non turbo case. But the non turbo 2001 engine displacement was only 3.4, went to 3.6 in 2002 for the non turbo. Google it, search reviews, you will see.

I would save the money and go for a 996 Turbo.. if i remember right the turbo has the block from 996 GT1 which is very solid.

also if you read about the early 996 3.4 liter motors, there are some reliability issues. Do search on 6speedonline.com and you'll see. Its pretty scary -- i was orignally going to get a C2 but after doing more research, i saved up for the turbo.

I have a 996 Turbo. I also have a 1983 911 Targa. I love porsches. I love the 996turbo with its AWD. Car is just to much fun to drive and gets me into trouble. You can pick these cars up at auction for 50k or less with low miles and all. I have my dealer Lic and have purchased a few. I am not a fan of the 911 C2 or C4 in the 99-01 model years. Just not that impressive.
