Traded z06 for '11 GT500
I would have to say I do enjoy the new mustangs. I definately like how they have managed to up their handling. I still don't prefer the "retro" style interior as I am more of a technology inspired person vs redefining retro styling. But the car itself is quite nice. Even the new 5.0s I have seen I tend to drive next to on the freeway and stare at for a bit. I think how the blinkers work is awesome for being such a trivial item...it just looks damn cool.
I personally will likely end up in a Z06 soon for the performance aspects but I do appreciate the GT500. They sound impressive with very few mods. Having 4 seats as well is rather nice...although not much of a concern for me, but is nice to have when needed.
As for the few kids who think oh better be careful of that extremely modded evo that could smoke you. Well I would tend to think for the people that own these cars it's not too much of a concern for them, quite a different class of car. Seeing as a few bolts on's would push the GT500 into a place a evo could only reach with a built motor, big turbo, and probably not pump gas which takes away from the experience and fun factor with a limited powerband. Anyone that has drove a Z06 or GT500 has experienced this...Flicking your toe and surging forward with violence or pushing through the floorboard and waiting 3000rpm for your 80lbs a minute turbo to spool isn't that fun imo. Nice car though...best it's a blast to hear that whine. Very addicting sound!

The only thing that Mustang has on the Z06 is the Sound and looks (maybe) That thing is 900 pounds heavier then the Z as well, but you do drive it more, I hope you are happy, great car if it can hook up.
I assume you mean in handling? Although they weigh close to 4000lbs a lightly modded GT500 easily surpasses 600whp+ with the right mods and can easily take out most stock frame turbo evo's (on the highway atleast). If you are talking 1/4 mile they stink...with that much horsepower they can't fit wide rubber and they run 12's at 130mph. Some with DR's I have seen dip into 10's though.

Getting from point A to B.... From a roll at high speeds maybe the GT500 is better, but I don't do that so I can't comment....At a track (road course) or on fun street runs, I am able to brake later, hold more speed in the turns, and pull on my friends GT500. No doubt the GT500 is fun, but for a four door machine the Evo is hard to beat (for the $$).
Thanks for all the comments. I'll try to answer as many questions as I can with one post.
As far as the interior, it is cheap but then again so was the interior on the Z06 and most of the other performance cars I have owned. The technology isn't so much in the guage cluster as it is in the Sync system with the touch screen navigation. I am really enjoying most of the aspects of Sync. Hands free and voice command comes in handy when I am trying to pay attention to the road.
As far as a comparison with the Vette, here is the short version.
Looks: Very subjective category but I have to give the GT500 the slight edge on this one both inside and outside the car. You have the muscular look versus the aerodynamic look.
Comfort: Once again the GT500 has the edge. More headroom and legroom for those in the front seats and the rear seats as a bonus. Headroom in back is ample but legroom depends upon who is sitting in front of you. With me driving, the person behind needs to be smallish. On hard cornering, the driver's seat does hold you in better than the one in the Vette though I have to say that the Vette's seat was just horrible for performance driving.
Gadgets: Again the GT500 wins. Granted, I had the 1LZ package (low end) on the Z06, but the GT500 would have still won this due to the Sync system. I must say that the thing I really miss from the Z06 is the heads up display. Glancing down at your speed was so much easier in the Vette. The G-meter was kind of neat too.
Braking: Even with the GT500 having the SVT package, the Z06 wins this hands down. Six piston front calipers along with much less weight = big time braking ability. Can't report on fade since I have not taken the GT500 to the track yet. The Vette had very little fade during a 30 minute outing.
Steering: About even here. The Vette had decent steering but should really have had great steering considering the rest of the performance. The GT500 is about the same. Neither one has the precise feel of the Evo.
Handling: Hands down the Vette. It remained glued to the road when you thought it should surely be heading into the bushes. The key was to know what to do with the throttle though. One wrong move with the gas pedal and you could still be headed straight for those bushes. I must say that the GT500 with the SVT package does very well considering its weight. Also, to be fair, I do have the convertible GT500 wich greatly decreases the stiffness.
Acceleration: Just check out the numbers. Even being down 45 hp, the Vette will get you to 60, the 1/4 and beyond quicker. Weight kills quickness. I believe numbers from the same magazine (to keep things equal) were Z06: 11.6 second 1/4 mile versus GT500: 12.2 second 1/4 mile. I don't remember the trap speeds. Of course others have gotten both through the 1/4 mile quicker. I believe the best time slip for a stock Z06 (yes stock tires also) was 10.98 seconds give or take a 1/100th of a second. I'm not sure what the best recorded time for the GT500 is. By the way, someone has already taken a modded 2011 Mustang GT into the 9's.
Modification potential: Both are cheaper to mod per HP than the Evo but the Mustang has to be one of the easiest/least expensive vehicles to mod currently out there. I can buy a package from Ford Racing and gain up to another 200hp for $6,300. I'm using Ford Racing as an example since they have a good reputation. Other aftermarket compaines put out similar packages for less.
Sound: The Corvette sounded good once I pulled the fuse controlling the duel mode exhaust but the GT500 (and most V8 mustangs) sound great out of the box.
As far as those comparing either one to the Evo, all you can really do is look at the numbers. Pick a track and look at the best lap times for these vehicles with the same or similar drivers behind the wheel. Most of the time it's hard to get a comparison with all other things being equal, but you can come close. Remember, once you throw in modifications, you're left with a difficult task in comparing any group of cars.

What a nice ride dude. Congrats! This is one of the few muscle cars that I actually like. Anyways, keep us posted on your car. I can see it making like 650hp easily(tune, pulley, headers).

I don't think you could've picked a better car to "downgrade" to. Ford has done a nice job with the new Mustang. The 2010 redesign makes the car look much nicer and more aggressive, then the new engine lineup for 2011 makes for a great practical muscle car.
Hey Carlos, how's the AMG treating you. I know that you got rid of your Z06 for many of the same reasons. Hope things are going well.
As far as how much these things are going for......the MSRP for the convertible with the electronics and SVT packages was approx. $60,500. Once you consider what tney gave me for trade in versus what my Z06 was actually worth, I guess I got the car for $5,000 under MSRP. Not bad considering they wanted $5,000 over MSRP and another local dealership was asking $10,000 over MSRP for the coupes they had.
