Thumbs up Corvette Zora $150,000 Mid-engine

Source: Jalopnik via C&D http://jalopnik.com/heres-chevys-pla...zor-1633072245

THE PLAN: The C8 flagship, the Zora ZR1, will debut the new mid-engine architecture. Launching as a 2017 model, it will define the top of the Corvette hierarchy just as its precursors did in 1990-1995 C4 generation and 2009-2013 C6 model years. As before, the ZR1 will be low volume, roughly 1500 units per annum, and high priced. We figure around $150,000.

THE ENGINES: Small-block V-8s will remain the engine of choice—at least for the near future. And, beginning with the Zora ZR1, they’ll nestle just in front of the rear axle.

THE STRUCTURE: Today’s aluminum space frame will need a heavy massage to provide the C8 with strong, stiff bones. But it’s doable: The robotic frame fabrication GM tooled up for the C7 can be expanded and reprogrammed to serve the coming car.

THE BODY: Doors are the next logical candidate for conversion from sheet-molded fiberglass to lighter, stiffer, crash-resistant carbon-composite assemblies. Current Corvette supplier Plasan Carbon Composites manufactures carbon-fiber panels for both the Corvette and the Viper, and this firm has the ability to supply additional parts using its advanced press-press processes.

THE CHASSIS: Expect the current control-arm suspensions, composite leaf springs, adjustable magnetic dampers, and Brembo brakes to carry on with appropriate revisions.

I consider the current Vette mid-engine anyhow since the engine is between the axles instead of over or in front of the front axle. Or instead of being over or behind the rear axle.

That would be awesome. It just seems like a dream though, something that's been rumored for a couple of decades. (The CERVIII is still one of my favorite vehicles) I hope they clean up that GTR looking rear end, but otherwise - hope it is real. Going after the Italians. I like it.

not a big fan of Vettes .. they always seem to steal styling from other super cars.. and that window and roof tapering looks just like a GTRs roof. It has a GTR looking rear end looks like it took a lot of its styling cues from the McLaren.. I think its a low budget look alike that will probably not be able to perform half as well as the cars it is copying. Just my opinion though.

Not bad looking. Interesting to see what the power output of a small v8 would be...

Really? There are so many low volume "no-name" supercars that use F/I Chevy small blocks out there that I can imagine anything from current (upcoming) Z06 power to over 1200hp is possible - whatever they think they can get away with and still cover it with a 3/36 (but maybe not 5/100 powertrain) warranty.

Just what I thought. GM has made a Skyline GT-S for Nissan. Now put two turbos in it, it will be a Skyline GT-T.

At over twice the cost of a Z28, I just don't think this model will impress at the track and it will likely be too stiff for the street. I would rather see Corvette make an awd car to compete with the likes of the Carrera 4 and GTR.

its BS, I'm willing to put money on it. there have been rumors of the next gen vette being mid engine since the C1... and there will be till the end of time... its just a way to sell magazine / get traffic to the website
