Didn't the Ring change between the GTR run and the Type R run? Also, what counts as first generation GTR? A 2009 GTR apparently did it in 7:26.7. I have a real time believing that Nissan shaved 20 seconds off the lap time.

No one knows for now. Honda say that to keep the hype up. What matters is that is faster than 7:50.

It's fast, but I think their whole "it's faster than a GTR" line is misleading.

Let's see what they have to say in April on the official release.

Record Time is officially out
7:43

7seconds faster than the previous generation.

Quote from HondaNews
"The pre-production development Civic Type R that achieved the lap time was technically representative of production specification. A full floating roll cage was installed for safety reasons, but did not provide any additional rigidity to the body frame. The extra weight of the cage was compensated for by the removal of the Display Audio system and rear seats. The car was using street legal, track-focused tires."

"UK confirmed that the car was running on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s.

The last time we asked, the Sport Contact 6s were the only tyres available on the car from factory, but it looks as though that has changed. We’ll know for sure if the Cup 2s are available as an option closer to the car’s launch."

whats a "floating" roll cage? does that just mean bolted in, not welded to the chassis? that still provides some chassis rigidity... is it enough to make a difference in lap times? I'd venture a guess nothing significant

edit:
found my answer to the floating cage thing here
The car is caged, but they claim it’s a floating cage which doesn’t affect the rigidity of the car in any way. This is not unusual, and I’ve driven several prototypes with cages like this. Typically, the safety cell sits inside the car, and every point of contact is a big rubber bush, kinda like your motor mounts.

with that I believe to doesn't make a difference

All signs point to the new CTR being seriously fast. I am personally not a fan of the styling, but it good to see Honda making exciting cars again.

i think floating cage is a bolt in cage which is not welded to the chassis. Like A pillar - strut towers etc. Neither gassetted to any other chassis place.

But even then i do strongly believe if you use a 6 or more point bolt in cage that is also add on some rigidity , specially with tower bars. Does it makes a second difference? I dont know, and i dont think so, but will give you more confidence in driving better car feed back . If that makes any sense. lol

Did you not read the part I quoted out of the link in my post? The cage is connected to the chassis via big rubber mounts kinda like engine mounts

I have little use for hero 'ring runs. Frankly, I don't trust the manufacturers not to cheat a little here and there for a gigantic payoff net time.

My belief level in the car will be solidified when it's full production version is in the hands of local journalists, and we can see same-day comparisons in something like Lightning Lap.

Even if this car is truly good, the hype train is moving substantially faster.
