CTR, Golf R, STI, EVO - Can I pick your Brain?
Yeah I know Mercs reliability is also nothing to shout about but at least in Malaysia where I live, the A45 especially the facelifted version so far has not much issues while almost all VW here in Malaysia has horrendous reliability issues until owners did protest demonstration and petition to VW Malaysia! Furthermore the A45 at least looks so much better and way much faster, and as I have mentioned I think will retain value much better too.
Looks are subjective. Golf R is refined. I think the A45/GLA45 looks like Jersey Boyz that try way too hard to look lux but are really gutter trash.
No A45 in the states. We get the GLA45 which has same engine but is a weird crossover thing. Golf R is built in Germany and has much better reliability than the rest of the VW range.

A45 is also built in Germany, by AMG. As for the looks, yes it is subjective but A45 also can look subtle if you don't buy the additional aero kits.
Back onto the CTR, an alarming number of people get overheat/limp mode warning tracking them in the summer heat, especially those who are tuned. So if buying for a track car, might want look at other options.
People that tune it get what get. Stock examples are what I'm curious about.
-who is tracking (higher skill level causes more turbo use, causes more heat, causes limp mode)
-Ambient temperature and atmospheric conditions
-Elevation
-Track type/conditions
It is definitely heat based.
Stock cars with hero drivers in hot temps on tough tracks: Very likely to go into limp mode within a few laps.
Stock cars with amateur drivers in cool temps on a less technical track with less elevation changes: Very unlikely to go into limp mode at all.
The biggest well fix out there is to change the small black front grill to something that allows more airflow. Inexpensive and effective. Doesn't cure the issue, but increases the time for it to occur markedly.
I have not had a limp mode, as my car has not been on track. The chances of hitting it in fun daily driving with some twisty roads at my low level, even in 100 degree heat is extremely low.
I follow Jackie Ding, former F1 driver, on IG and they recently picked up a brand new Supra for track duties. I asked him why he choose the Supra for track duties over the Type R and he said the same thing that it overheats. Even with cooling mods the car gets hot.
former open wheel race car driver, certainly not F1
