Post Some empirical knowledge about car rust and how to suppress it

Dealing with rust on our Evo's can be counter-intuitive. I want to believe that there is a permanent solution that makes rusty metals never rust again. But no, as long as the metal is not alloyed to resist rust, there is no chemical or physical treatment that can permanently prevent it. Like Repair Geek said, the rust-preventive spray is like an engine oil. You can choose the best brand of engine oil, but if you don't change it periodically, the engine is not going to last.

As my Evo X has become a rusty old dog, I recently did some research and reading about car rust and how to suppress it. Here are a few bulletins that I would like to share:

▪ Do not try to prevent rust permanently. It is impossible. Instead, apply a proper rust-preventive spray every year or so.
▪ "Permanent" treatments like CrN PVD or Cerakote are only appropriate on metals that won't rust, like stainless steel or gun barrels. If they are applied to car frame, they will only trap moisture inside and cause rust underneath, which will be costly to fix.
▪ Lanolin based rust preventives help displace the existing moisture hidden behind rust.
▪ Avoid the rust preventives formulated to stay on for years after years. Those will harden when the solvent vaporizes, and stop creeping and actively displacing new moisture.
▪ Favor the rust preventives that do not harden and need to be renewed annually, like fluid film. They will creep and continuously displace new moisture, which is why that the Navy uses it on their F/A-18E/F Super Hornets:

When testing how well a liquid creeps we apply a small amont of it on a vertical rusted surface. In our expirience we have never seen anything like Fluid Film that creeps so well and yet not falling down. We have not tested Blaster yet, but from the looks of this video I cannot help to think that it has to contain solvents. Wich means it creeps good at first, probably for 3 weeks and when the solvents leave the product it sticks and hardens, but stops creeping and doesent continue to displace moisture and oxygen like Fluid Film. When applying this in the long run i expect rust will develope underneath the hardened coating and it will flake of. Looking forward to testing the 2 side by side. Good tip for a comparison, Apply Fluid Film to the left side of the vehicle and Blaster to the right. This way they stop the same amount of rust formed on a car and are exposed to the same environment. Looking forward to your future videos. Regards Funderud Antirust

There is a 28-minute video by Repair Geek explaining the ins and outs of car rust. It's very informative if you want to understand rust and how to suppress it:

Great Information! I would like to add that rust can be prevented when storing vehicles and car parts by using a dehumidifier or something similar that can remove moisture from the air.

Rust bucket

I used POR-15 on the underside of Rust Bucket. My friend that has done paint and body work his whole life recommended that it would be the best option. It was extensive work to remove everything and prep out the undercarrage. But it has been over a year now and it is still looking good. No chipping, peeling, or flaking just an amazing powder coat like finish.

I'm in houston so I dont really have rust issues, I have removed all the rust prevention sprayed under my car because I've had it going into my hair, clothes, gloves, eyes!, etc. If I were in the rust belt, I would use my 90degree powerwasher attachment more to make sure salts dont stay too long under the car
