I don't know about driving, but it sounds bad in first gear.

Two Tiltons came apart at Mid Ohio last month. That's enough for me to stay away from them. I've been real happy with my Exedy twin.

hi ppl, i'd like to share a little bit of my experience with TILTON & EXEDY clutches

i've never been to drag strip or launch my car

i've had exedy twin before, installed by burshur, for some reason, my exedy twin pedal feel was A LOT stiffer than everyone else's..........but good clutch for sure, shifts fast, drivability on street is nice too, engagement is harsh, but if u r good at rev match, it's not bad at all

after my exedy was gone, i went with Tilton Cerametallic twin
This thing is very tricky to drive on the street, the clutch being so light, just letting off the clutch pedal, the car won't really move, u really have to get on the gas to move the car, then u get this slip sound of the discs when the car takes off
the engagement is HARSH, but if u rev match well, it's fine, just taking off is a little tricky
as for performance, i liked the tilton A LOT better han the exedy, with the smallr pressure plate assembly, and lighter flywheel, the whole thing is just so light
makes it a lot faser to go through gears, when u up shift, the rpm drops a lot faster when i had the exedy, makes the shifting faster again, also when u down shift, it doesn't take much of gas to rev the rpm for rev matching

clutch write up continue...........................

Yes Sir I have.

I have driven an Evo 8 at both Mid Ohio and at Norwalk with one in it and loved it. Drove it that same day to get dinner as well (this car is daily driven by a close friend). In my opinion the tilton is not really good for the street, but it suits my particular driving style and I could deal with it on the street. The reason that I prefer them is the fact that I have had two very close friends, one with a Subaru Sti and one with an Evo that had the Exedy's and both had the similar problems, and both switched to Tilton's that are now daily driven and have not had any issues for about 12,000+ miles.

I know they make noise but once the pressure plate loads the disks its solid. My experience with Exedy twins and word from a few others have not been as good as with the tiltons. I have heard about 5 Exedy twins vibrate/chatter while clamped or engaged while crusing at various speeds.

What is your opinion?

last event at Midohio, my tilton twin was broken
Matt at slickmotorsport got it pulled out for me
we inspected the clutch, everything look 100% fine, except for the slines in the discs, they are gone!!...........i'm gonna call up titon to ask why is that
but wut is amazing is, i put down about 5k miles on this clutch in a year, have been to tracks several times, the material on the discs are still as thick as when i just got them!!!!, even the flight wheel, doesn't look worn at all, the reason is that tilton clutch is like ON AND OFF, there's no slipage at all from shifting, only slipping that takes place is when the car takes off from rest, so i would think this clutch can last LONG if the slines would hold up

anyways, i'm calling tilton to see wheather they'll give me new discs or they'll put in new slines for the discs, wil also send the whole clutch back to them to have it inspected, if anyone is interested to buy it, pm me
reason i'm not keeping it is i had ACT ordered, because we thought the tilton was toasted, and ineed clutch put in like RIGHT NOW, so i can go to the track this weekend

my little experience with ACT

i just got my car back yesterday
i had standard ACT pressure plate with 6 puck sprung hub disc
it's sooooo easy to drive i can't believe it, totally not used to it
it drives like my friend's civic, couldn't be more happier about the drivability

BUT, i'm missing the fast shifting of my exedy twin and tilton twin already

If anyone wants a Megan catback w/1500 miles on it, let me know.... complete with hardware and gaskets for $140.00. I will also have a Buschur 2.5" dp for sale in a week or so for $75 in mint shape.

THanks

Without argument the Tilton is a superior clutch. I've never driven there cerametallic clutch so I can not comment, but the Carbon unit is quite aggressive and probably not the best solution for most daily driven vehicles.

You have a new timing belt and tensioner also? Since you have a 2004 evo its something you should consider replacing at the same time....

ACT and new oil pressure gauge ordered

Things to be installed once the clutch arrives:

1. Goodrich SS brake lines
2. Centric rotors
3. ARC heat shield
4. Hawk F+R pads
5. Shifter bushings
6. ACT clutch
7. New oil pressure gauge
8. Transfer case, rear diff and tranny + oil changed (all fluids)

I think I will be plenty ready for the next NASA event . Gonna run KDW's for now, will order slicks for stock wheels next month

Didn't you run in HPDE 1 at Mid Ohio? If so, you really have no business running slicks (R-6's, 710's, Z214's, etc.) yet IMO. Go with something in between if you must, like an RA-1 or A032r. Slicks are very unforgiving - you have lots of grip, and then you have none. FWIW, I've been tracking my Evo since I bought it in '03, and this is first year I've run slicks.

Man, Alex is going nuts on the mods this year.

The ACT should be a good replacement for the stocker, but you'll need to go twin disc if you start to go the NYQuil or dadriva route.
