Prosecutors were considering charges against a driver whose two passengers died after a single-car crash that closed down the Edens Expressway early Sunday, police said.
Justine Stevens, 22, of the 400 block of East Lake Avenue in Glenview and Joseph Thomas, 23, of the 6600 block of West Imlay Street in Chicago died of injuries from the 2:15 a.m. crash, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Neither was wearing a seat belt, said Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Russell Gann.
The driver of a Mitsubishi was speeding north on Interstate Highway 94 south of Wilson Avenue when he tried to move from the left lane into the center lane and noticed another vehicle had moved into that lane ahead of him, Gann said. The driver braked while trying to avoid the other vehicle, causing the Mitsubishi to spin out. The car's passenger side then slammed into the highway median, Gann said.
The driver, who was wearing his seat belt, was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Gann said. Information about his condition was not available.
The driver was cited with minor traffic violations, but further charges were pending, including ones related to his blood-alcohol content being just above the legal limit, Gann said.
After the crash, several lanes of the northbound Edens were closed until after 6 a.m., Gann said.

this is truly sad.. IF he was JUST over the legal limit that still would be enough to impair your judgement. 3 years ago i had a beer with my dinner at a fancy restaurant and drove home. biggest mistake of my life. ended up rolling my car over 3 times on a public roadway. thank god NOBODY was hurt. i was only person in my vehicle. the alcohol didnt impair my driving.. but DID impair the decision making process because i chose to pass when i soberly would not have. seat belt is the only thing that saved my life. i live by the seatbelt. if you dont your foolish. i do believe however with strong feeling that the driver of this accident should only be responsible for the passengers to a mediocre extent. they CHOSE to not wear their seatbelts. he was still foolish to speed though. if you ride with me in my car you were your seatbelt. even in the back seats. you dont like it? then tell me what the back of my car looks like when i drive away without you....
my 2c..
