Theft Prevention Tips
With all the shady activity going on, especially in the Chicago area I'd like to know what people would recommend as a theft deterrent. Whether its alarms, clubs, gps units, lojack, anything. I'll be looking to secure my car a little better sooner than later. If you don't feel comfortable sharing what you have, then by all means, don't. I just want to get an idea of what works, and what not to waste money on...i'd like to get something that will prevent thefts, not help recover thefts.

All in all, I think the best methods would be to protect your ECU, immobilize your car (personal car boot, the club, clutch pedal lock), immobilize your fuel system, and a 2 way pager alarm.
If you have access to a garage, spend a bit of money and get a great security system.
Sorry if this sounds a bit redundant from the quotes above, but this car theft has to stop. These guys need to get caught some how.
After a recovered Evo was found, it has been discovered that these guys are swapping out the ECUs in order to get around the ignition immobilizer. At this point, the best thing to do is get an alarm with a 2 way pager, some way to disable the ignition, and a way to disable the car from being pushed away to get started.
Get a camera on your car if at all possible. A decent monitoring system can be had to about $150.
If you have a garage, get as many lights, motion sensing lights, motion alarms, in house entry notifications, and motion cameras. Anything you can do to deter or at least slow down the theft for you to catch them in the act. Cameras would greatly help so we can get a more accurate description of what they look like.

That is exactly how they are getting the cars. Swapping in an ECU with an immobilizer disabled on it is actually an incredibly quick and easy process. After that all they need is a shaved key or a set of jiggler keys that anyone can buy online.

I was just thinking about a few more things.... but being on an open forum those b*stards might be monitoring these threads for activity. This might not be the best place to inside tips on preventing theft.
This may go far enough that they are picking their victims based on description of mods and value of $$ invested in their cars (posted right here on these forums).... Which town they live in? House / apartment? all this can be easily figured out of if you look at someone's post/thread history.
The Scary thought is ... that this person / group of thieves might be a member on here.

^ Yea they are definitely a member on here and know evos really well if they know how to swap out ECU's to get the car going.
Get an alarm like me and hope for the best. I might also pick up "the club" or something like that.

Unfortunately if they want it bad enough, odds are it'll be gone. My buddies that got taken had a nice alarm on it that would also page his keyfob and it never went off when his was taken.
The club is a good idea, but can be defeated easily too......
I dont think theyre being pushed anywhere either... If anyone drives by, that's about as shady looking as something can be, a pair of guys pushing the car down a few houses... Too much time. Theyre just hoping that by the time anyone hears an exhaust note at 4AM, the cars already gone.
I think the best bets are LoJack and the Escort CIS setups.... If they want the car bad enough, they'll get it. This way you have the best chance of them getting caught red handed OR at least getting your car back before it becomes a shell..... Both units have early detection warning which is what you want.
If your cars leaves a certain perimeter, it immediately warns you via calls, emails, and texts and starts the recovery process. By the time they get the car somewhere, the police should already be informed.....

For those that have a garage and subscribe to home security service... I added extra contacts, and the motion detector to my garage as well. It doesn't cost anymore montly, and is a one time charge with ADT. Not only does the loud siren go off immediately in the garage and house, but the cops are called immediately too. I think its was only an additional $230, well worth it to me when I'm not home, or sleeping.
