To the OP: In the event that you end up having to pay for the gearbox replacement, PM me. I am interested in purchasing the outgoing box for inspection.

BTW - The MR TC-SST box lists for a little over $8K/US. And labor is about the same as replacing a clutch on a GSR (pulling the gearbox), minus the actual clutch replacement.

This thread is full of idiots. Do you guys seriously think people buy Evo's not to mod them? The car should be built to withstand a substantial increase of power, not minor mods.

To the TS: I suggest you take the location out of your signature.

Yes, a number of people do not modify their Evolutions. It's the Super Street/Sport Compact Car crowd that has been cleverly marketed the idea that they need to "modify" their cars to enjoy them.

I don't see how it's reasonable or even plausible for the engineers to anticipate any number of increases in power and engineer it into the drivetrain and chassis.

I agree with your statement.

No production car are design with the idea for owner to substantially increase the power. If it can, then its a bonus, & not a requirement for the maker. Thats why dealer void warranty if they know you mod the car & cause the failure.

Nowadays, its harder & harder for cars to be over engineered due to cost competitveness especially during this period.

The car is build perfectly fine from the factory, with more power (although the 5 speed is a sticking point) than one need for daily driving.

Yes, its prefectly fine that the owner wanted more power (for tracking or dragging), thats why there is aftermarket parts for sale.

Just need to keep in mind that failures/problem due to the extra power isn't gonna be warranty under Mitsubishi or the dealer. Then everything is fine

Mitsubishi didn't sell the car by promoting its speed (or acceleration), or how fast it can lap a certain track. Its always been controllable power & well balance handling that the they try to sell. If so, why do you think they stick to 280+ bhp, when they can easily make it over 300, afterall, power is one of the easlier thing to improve on a car, especially with a turbo.

I've seen several times on these forums and others mention of a 350 lb-ft torque limit on the stock MR trans. Had you read/heard the same?

Not sure of the cause? I shopped at three different dealerships before picking up my GSR and at each one of them I was told that the MR should not be modified. I'm surprised you weren't warned.

In any case, good luck getting this all sorted out. And let us know what happens.

Your name is John, right? I recognize your sn from some type of racing you did with AMS and it's disappointing to see that you aren't more above board about this, as the OP should be.

If he truly knows what he has gotten himself into, why is he misrepresenting himself? For that matter, if he wanted the best diagnosis, as he's previously stated, then he should let the car go in for inspection in the condition that he drove it so that they could consider the impact that the modifications had on the clutch wear. He's obviously trying to defraud MMNA, and he's most likely going to get caught.

I've got no burning passion for MMNA, having been on the receiving end of a lot of their BS, but OP is clearly seeking more than he should ever be entitled to, and it's going to be funny to watch him fail.

Now, how about you go find a cause worth supporting and leave the cheats to get what they deserve, mhkay?
Ok ... couple things here, no my name is not John, and two, I apologize if you felt I was using you as an example, because that was the intent. I was making a statement based on what I have seen over the last 5 years.

Long and short, check my posts, I have always been up front with the dealers, from the day I bought the car. Note the post from two years ago below ..

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...hip-rules.html

I plan to continue this trend, because as I said ... you got to pay to play. If you treat your car like a race car, it will break like one, and eventually, it will cost like one as well.

Sorry 144....no offense, my apologies if you felt I had done this toward you ... after rereading ... I can how you could.

Well, a comment is warranted here: When you say the X "... is build [built] perfectly from the factory..." I get a little confused. Specifically, what was "perfect" about the OEM tune? Running rediculously low A/F results in all sorts of potential problems (e.g., fuel dilution, low mileage, etc.). This should have been identified before Mitsu let the X go. Rather, all of us have to retune the car to correct same at a cost of $500-$800. Now with this retune, one will get increases in power output. The X (GSR and MR) should and HAS been able to handle such power increases with no issues. Additionally, they have also produced a sufficiently robust power plant and drivetrain to handle simple bolt ons (intake, exhaust) and their associated power gains with tuning. However, increases cannot go on forever; it is not just a question of "paying to play"; reliability, the most important aspect of a DD, is inversely related to increasing power gains. It is up to each individual owner to define how much power is worth the loss in reliability.

Later, Ken

I said the X came perfectly fine from the factory, I didn't said it was perfect from the factory. Maybe I should rephase, the X came quite fine from the factory.
I agree it has some problems, some potiential problems, and alot cheaply made parts for a 35k+ car. I also do think a simple tune + minor modes like intake, exhaust should not blow anything, or cause any major issue.

Like you said, if one goes really crazy, & start going for crazy numbers, something gonna give. Whats worrying also is the fact that alot of the guys don't bother to upgrade the handling or brakes to contain the increase power.

In the end, like they said, you need to pay to play. If not, stay stock or stick to minor mods.

and your point about upgrading systems other than just power mods is right on.

DAM WE ALL WOULD DO THE SAME.... my freind with a new expedition put a supercharger on it and blew the tranny 3 times and had for give him a tranny 3 times.... I love the evo but i dont care about mitsubishi and im not going to give them 8K every time i blow my tranny... its an EVO and the SST is supposed to hold power so F THEM.... and to all the performance shops out there please build something that can take the power... i will HAPPLY spend 8K on a perfomance tranny but i will not pay MITSU 8K for a stock replacement... and i and doing the same to my SST... I will have 320 in the next two months and i do launch the car and even drift with it... like someone said you need to pay to play but not MITSU... i payed 45k for the car and thats all MITSU is getting from me... and i do care about my cars to the point that i wont take my car if i know i wont have a safe parking spot for it... i but only the best parts and only hand wash.... but when i drive it i expect it to hold and do what its ment to do.

You paid $45k? Is that typical for the X MR or were you in deep on a trade-in or did you go buck-wild on the options, etc.? I think I paid $34k for my IX MR and I had been rolling vehicles for awhile so I felt like I took it in the shorts at that price.

*edit - btw, sorry for going a bit off topic, just curious about the post.
