Unhappy First MR Trans to go...

Ok so i am posting this as it's finally happened..... My clutch has given up on my MR.

Symptoms: When pulling away normally, between first and second gear, the car feels like it has a really bad case of wheel hop. This isn't the case.... I took my car to a few specialists and the final diagnosis is the clutch isn't grabbing properly, but the clutch is grabbing too hard.Only happens in first and second gear.

I would say, yes i drive the car hard but not on an everyday basis. The car felt fine when driving it normally, it's just the 1st and 2nd gear change.

I feel the car was modded to a medium extent (346hp), and as you can tell from my signature it wasn't a silly modded car.

I have taken it to Mitsu and have spent spring break putting the car back to stock ( which was horrible.... Its like shooting yourself in the leg lol).

Please don't think i'm bad mouthing the MR, i love the car... I have had so much fun with it, but i think i always wanted more... I wanted the clutch and wanted the extra horsepower that i could not get from the MR. People with the MR i do hope you guys love the car, but i think i was always worried about this in the back of my mind. I felt that i couldn't enjoy the car as much as i really didn't want this to happen.

I'm not sure the cause of this situation, but i will tell you not to push this car too hard, and be careful with the modding!

Any questions let me know..... It is a sad day for my Evo, but i cannot wait to get my WW GSR and mod the hell out of that... My goal for the MR was 450hp, my goal now for the GSR is 550hp... Fully achievable! (i hope ) lol....

Someones RA tranny went down recently as well. Here's the link with info on that one. Car was unmodded IIRC. https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/20...-casualty.html

I am saying that they will definitely know the car was modded and you wont be getting anything under warranty. But I am curious to see how it actually turns out.

That's why I'm leaving my car stock until the limits of the transmission are known. I hate to say this but people like the OP are the ones that are doing the R&D on the limits and people like me are content to drive the car stock. My car's a DD and I'm not really looking for outrageous HP anyway but IMO the transmission is still too new to be pushing the limits. I thought it was pretty well known by now that if you wanted to go high HP that the GSR was the car to go with.

FWIW - the GSR doesn't have an indestructible clutch. You run higher hp, run the car hard, it will eventually have issues. Hell, if you just don't know how to drive well you will have issues (I'm not implying that of the OP).

How many miles are on the car? Did you ever track it? How often did you launch? I'm just curious and I think it would help other X owners in knowing this info (I'm a IX MR owner so I know I will eventually need a new clutch and tranny).

Want to know the limit of the tranny? It's listed on the website of the manufacturer; 375 lb-ft of torque input, so at the crank.

Because the OP used a manual boost controller, I guarentee the torque was well above the published limit due to having to run a lot of midrange boost to try to keep the boost up on the top end.

If you want to keep it reliable, do not increase your torque by more than 25%; 375 torque limit over the rated 300 tq of the stock engine is about a 25% increase. Even then... it might not be super reliable as the shift calibration was done with a lot less torque, especially at the upper end of the rpm range.

Of course it's not indestructible, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper to upgrade!

This is why I don't trust those semi auto tranny, just like M3's SMG system. my buddy had some issue with it last year in his M3, they had to replace something that cost a lot of $$. Starndard shift is the way to go if you want to mod it. my 05 MR still has stock clutch and tranny is very smooth and car runs hard.

Agreed and I never said anything to the contrary. The OP seems surprised that this happened (again, I wouldn't mind seeing more info like miles, etc.) and now he is going to a GSR and will be attempting for more power.

I wouldn't be surprised if at some point mods will be coming off a GSR so that the OP can take it to stock and get some warranty work done!

*edit - btw, I would absolutely do the same thing. Might as well try to get Mitsu to do some warranty work before paying for it all yourself.

Crap like this is why honest people with stock cars get hassled at dealerships for warranty work. You modified it, it broke, and now you expect Mitsubishi to fix it on their dime?

Sorry to hear that ... I think we all know this in the back of our minds. I am curious to know how many miles, and how the car was driven? I know mine is a time bomb right now with over 350hp, but you got to pay to play. However, I got 20k miles out of a stock Evo 8 Clutch, ... and did I mention they were all opentracking w/ over 310whp? So ... there is hope .. there is always hope.

How would you feel if someone tried to do to you in your professional life what you are trying to do to the dealership and the manufacturer?

How would you feel if you paid for 10 gallons worth of gas and got 5 gallons?

I could go on but am confident your conscience will get the message through to you sooner or later.

These guys are right.

I don't feel bad for the OP. Not one bit. You modded the car beyond the capability of the transmission. Plain and simple. If you didn't know the limit of the transmission than you shouldn't have modded the car.

Pay the money to get a new tranny. They don't/won't open the transmission to repair a part. You've got to buy a new one. You're a total douchebag if you think Mitsu should cover it under warranty

if you take care of your MR you should be fine. I've got 124k miles on my 06 IX MR with no tranny issues yet. It's due for another clutch, but i got 70k out of the stocker, 50k out of the Exedy stage 1 i replaced it with before they started slipping. other than routine maintenance, the car is fine, and i beat on my car daily. on the street, on the track, and on the drag strip.

i thought about buying a new MR, but you pretty much have to mod them to make them worth driving. they are retardedly slow stock, but if you mod, it'll break. if they made one with stronger clutch packs, or a traditional 6 speed, i might consider buying one, but for now, my EVO IX MR is still a better car in my eyes.
