You are referring to the Ground Effect. The front undertray diverts air away from under the car, thereby creating an area of lower pressure air under the car, which 'sucks' the car towards the ground.

Wikipedia has a decent write-up on it.

Also worth noting that the difference between the front undertray, front lips/splitters and canards is that the latter is the only one contributing to downforce while the former two contribute to the ground effect.

The ground effect (from what I understand) can also be improved by having a completely flat surface under the car, something that many continental makes have, but only a few Japanese manufacturers do. IIRC, the Skyline GTR34 and the 350Z have lots of underbody panels which contribute to the ground effect

In the real world all it does is keep crap out of the engine bay. Almost all new cars have the a splash shield. The EVO is a rally car so its there to keep snow, mud, rocks, and wrong-place-wrong-time spectators out of the engine bay.

If you drive it in the winter or hit every large puddle you see you might want to keep it. If you are worried about melting cones on your downpipe I say stop hitting cones.

The only one area that it appears functional is for the FMIC. It seems to trap air in mouth instead of allowing it to escape below. Not sure if that makes a differnece or not.

I lost the undertray after an off at Nationals back in September. After we got the car back together there was a VERY noticeable lift in the high speed (130-ish) bend on the back straight at Mid Ohio that wasn't present before when the tray was on. IMO, it is very much functional at speed. At an auto-x or on the street you'd NEVER notice it missing.
