Shot-peening helps to slow the onset of fatigue crack formation. Its most useful when the stresses in the gears are large (undersized gears), so it could provide a useful benefit for the 6MT 4th gear. Hard to say how much benefit without doing testing. My WAG would be a 10-30% improvement in lifetime. However, if the gears are overheating, shot-peening will not help at all. My guess is that effectively controlling the gear and gear oil temperature will take care of the problem. If I could get my hands on someone's busted 4th gear, and a new 4th gear, I could take them into my lab and find out what killed the busted 4th gear.

This information would be great for those of us not wanting to switch the 5-speed.

Shot peening is expensive. The equipment is stupid pricey and it has to be done correctly or you will not get the results you are wanting. You can't take gears or connecting rods and toss them into a wheel thrower like you would a set cast Iron heads. The equipment for doing gears is much more advanced and the shot separation is crucial or you will damage the part that you are peening. Shot peening when performed correctly can increase the service life as much as 20% and gains as high as 30% are not uncommon. Make note that most of the gears in the 6 speed transmission are shot peened from the factory. However, to what extent was the intensity and saturation of their work? That is yet to be known.

One could look at it this way; if the 6 speed is rated for 290ft.lbs of torque, shot peening could raise that up to 375ft.lbs.... While that may not seem like much we need to recognize that this is working torque, the amount of torque that the gears can handle without failure...too bad most people are using clutches that have torque capacities way above this.

If you can get a new 4th gear I can send you my broken 4th gear for testing. BTW, I believe I payed approx $150 for a new 4th. I can check my invoice from TRE when I get home.

Some pictures of my met lab equipment are attached.

Can 15-17 people each pitch in $10 (to cover the gear and shipping)? If you want to pitch in $10, add your name to the list and PM me.

I would pitch in 10, let me know if there is enough interest. Would be cool if we could Warr's broken gear also to see if both broken gears were from the same problem. (sure
the were)

TTP, looks like you killed input and output gears on 4th? I didn't notice that before. Wow.

My output gear also had stress fractures but hadn't shed teeth yet like my input gear did.

Funniest post of '06

I'll pitch in - only if I can get an 8-Ball for free

Both War's and Razor's MR's were modified... is it likely an MR with closer to stock power levels would have more luck? Starting to wish I'd bought a base IX or a Z06

I think GSC should just grind up some stock Evo IX cams and send them out so the people rushing the process can be satisfied. Their $599 is obviously burning a hole in their pocket. They can claim they have a "cammed" Evo IX and can cease posting here for updates 3 times a day.

They were also using thinner tranny fluids not up to the stock specs, which most likely over heated their trannies. Stick to stock fluids and for power mods don't go beyond an intake mod, header, exhaust (TBE), fuel pump and flash and you should be fine, IMHO ...
