Well today was a big eye opener.

Today at Thunderhill was about 62-65F ambient. Pretty cool track all day.

I was instructing today so I only got about 65 on track miles. The first couple sessions I did I wasn't pushing the car as hard as I usually do since this was my first track event in about 5 months. Trans temp hit 194F to 203F.

The last session I had in the day was at 4pm and the track was cold and slippery. I was pushing the car pretty hard playing lead and follow with a evo track buddy of mine. After 3 laps the trans temp raised to 221F. This is when I came in and called it a day.

This really makes me wonder what kind of temps the trans was doing in the 90-95F summer events.

The trans cooler is going on ASAP.

that's pretty hot all right ... where did you measure, on the housing or in the fluid?

with temps like that where the sensor is located, you're guaranteed to have much higher tooth face temps, how much exactly is anyone's guess.

Do let us know how it performs with the cooler.. When do you forsee being able to do some hot laps with it installed?

about a year ago I mentioned that I bought the RS for the 5-speed and got some interesting comments back. The 6-speed in my old MB C230 went a couple times... trans temp, broken gears... the 5-speed is still holding up well in my Evo... though, it DOES NOT disengage properly at times and I expect I will break a gear eventually... my guess is 2nd... fresh fluid seems to be the key... I change mine with every oil change or, every 3k miles AND after every track event ... helps a lot in regards to smoothness...

Hope everyone is well,
Thomas

my 6sp has started to act up again too in a similiar fashion - it doesn't like to get out of gear sometimes. It will even make a kind of humming noise when I try to move the shifter, which goes away a second later when it finally lets me move. Anybody have any insight to why this happens? It's never done this before ...

What you experienced on your other car is totally irrelevant. It's a totally different car w/ a totally different tranny. Almost all variables are different. Different power, drivetrain, etc..

I think there are enough examples of tracked 5-spd evos out there to conclude that the 5-spd can take the repeated abuse.

razorlab,

Do you have any pics of your oil pickup/return in the tranny? I need to install a cooler in my MR and wanted to find out where you got the connections from

Thanks..

If you dont have the transmission off the car with the casing off, you will have to use the drain and fill plugs for hooking up the tranny cooler.

Damn. I was hoping not to have to build a "T" system to get the fill plug to work properly. Plus i want to hook up a temp gauge. Guess i don't have much of a choice..

So, as WarmPepsi said, do you happen to know the detailed on the plug's thread pitch and what not?

For the 5-speed you need one 16 x 1.5mm and one 18.5 x 1.5mm for the 6 speed you need two 18.5x 1.5mm

You can find them at:

http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/adv...PLUMADAPMETRIC

You can select the size that fits the other fittings you are buying. I'm sure you can source them locally or at Summit etc as well.

Razorlab - I'd love to hear what your temps are for your next track event. A transmission cooler sounds very tempting now.

Everyone - I was thinking... The UK FQ-400 and FQ-360 use a six speed transmission. I'm certain that people are road racing these cars. With the additional torque, it seems almost certain to me that they would be busting their transmissions quicker than us.

Does anyone know which company is responsible for designing the modifications for these cars in the UK? Maybe we can get specs on their transmissions and gain some insight.

Is there an Evolution forum specifically for the UK?
