Everyone - I was thinking... The UK FQ-400 and FQ-360 use a six speed transmission. I'm certain that people are road racing these cars. With the additional torque, it seems almost certain to me that they would be busting their transmissions quicker than us.

Does anyone know which company is responsible for designing the modifications for these cars in the UK? Maybe we can get specs on their transmissions and gain some insight.

Is there an Evolution forum specifically for the UK?
I hit over 230F at the last track event, in 55F ambient temp. Good news is I am getting off my lazy *** and getting the cooler installed.

I was wondering the same thing about the UK guys. I think most of the hardcore track guys are using older EVO's with the stouter 5spd for track and not many of the newer evo 8 + 6spd's are making alot of power and are really fast on track. I could be totally wrong though. I posted on lancerregister.com when I blew my 6spd and got no responses, or responses like "how did you do that?".

Oops. I thought you already had your transmission cooler installed. I was hoping to be dazzled by your low transmission temp making it safe for for all 6-speed owners to track their cars.

I posted a thread in lancerregister.com.

Even if the hardcore are sticking with the 5-speed, I'm certain that some people must be tracking an FQ equipped with a 6-speed. Even without mods, the torque rating on a FQ-360 is 363 lb-ft vs our 289 lb-ft. I think that Shep stated that even a stock Evo is close to the max spec of our gears. If it's the case that UK and US transmissions are the same, I would assume that the an FQ-400 would destroy a 6-speed much quicker than we would. Something must be different or else Mitsu wouldn't even sell anything with a higher torque spec than our US models.

I'll let you know if I get any replies.

We've got a couple of replys on lancerregister.com.

These guys are doing multiple laps of Nurburgring (I'm jealous) without failure.

Does anyone know the part number of 4th gear in the MR? I don't think I've seen a definitive answer yet. Please help me out.

For the 6-speed, 4th gear on the input shaft is available separately, but Mitsu does not sell the gears on the output shaft separately. You have to buy the entire assembled output shaft.

The actual rated trorque capacity for the 6 speed is 290ft.lbs of torque.

Do a search or read some of my old posts.

Well, we're just talking about the 6spd here. All USDM MRs came with 6spds, so I'm not sure how you have a 5spd USDM MR unless you swapped it out.

Jon, have you had any 2006 MR 6 speeds in the shop yet? Any difference on
gear sizes on the output shaft?

Just came across some of these threads regarding the MR's 6-speed, and it is a little disheartening to say the least.

I really wanted the 6 speed, and one of the main reasons I went with it was because I read it was so much better for road courses, so you know I'll be keeping a close eye on how things develop.

I do have two questions though:

1.) As the poster above me stated, has there been any updates on the gears in the IX's? There seemed to be some question as to whether these were changed up from the VIII MRs. It would be great if they were beefed up slightly, but I know this is more than likely just wishful thinking on my part.

2.) For these people who are having the transmission problems, how hard are you running the car? I was planning on doing maybe half a dozen open-track days at most through the Spring, Summer, and Fall starting in '07. Nothing really too serious or competitive - more for my own enjoyment than anything. Would that be enough that I should still be pretty concerned about this issue, or are the guys who are having their tranny's go out running in SCCA type events, where they're pushing the cars to the limit from the get go?

Even if the gears are wider for the 6-speeds in the IX's, razorlab has shown that the oil temps during track driving are higher than acceptable. I think that anyone who intends to track their 6-speed should plan on adding an external tranny oil cooler and pump.

Yeah, I saw a thread where Jon went into detail on exact gear sizes between the 5 and 6 speed trannys. I don't remember the specifics, but do a search and you should find it. He presents a lot of good info.

like I posted earlier, the 4th gear output shaft of the 06 IXMR is the same size as the 5 speed while the 05 VIIIMR is smaller.

any idea if it's possible to upgrade an 05 6sp with the 06 6sp gears (if it's being rebuild anyway)?
