Help with ohlins clunking

Hi guys,

Need some help from folks with experience with ohlins. My driver side corner has recently been clunking at any speed when suspension is even slight compression.

After checking between the good front corner and the one with the clunk. I think I may have found a culprit. Refer to picture below.

That top hat on the bad corner appears to be very loose where as on the other corner its much tighter. Here is a pic of the top mount for reference.

Anyone know how to tighten this top hat or what other issues it might be?

Many thanks,
-yang

My right front Ohlin started clunking too.

Looking at the nut at the top of the strut under the hood, it had about 3-4 threads showing. Th left front had 10+ threads showing.

I used a battery powered impact (the same Dewalt that I change wheels with at events) to tighten it down. It's set to about 70 ft. lbs. The clunk went away for about 2 weeks but it came back. Tightened it again and 2 weeks later it came back. Used some red locktite on it and the clunk has been gone ever since.

Hope this helps.....................

I've got Ohlins. I was at the track a couple of weeks ago and was checking some fasteners under the hood when I had some spare time. The top nuts as described by solo2m3 were a bit loose. They were easy to tighten up with an appropriate hex wrench and closed end wrench. These do seem to loosen up with time.

i plan to check these regularly now!

contact hotchkiss, they have excellent customer service and really stand by their product.

They can provide you with new mounts.

Ohlins says 70 ft. lbs (or is lb. ft, I never get it right). Suggest locktite like I mentioned above.

I have been having the same problem with K Sport coilovers on my Ralliart. I just carry a socket wrench in the car and tighten down when needed.
Pretty sure it is a byproduct of the MacPherson setup on the front. I never have a problem on the rears (multilink).
If I tighten too much, I get a spring clunk when turning the wheel at very slow (parking lot) speeds. Maybe the pillowball mount is binding and not completely turning at low speed? Need to check torque specs on the K Sports.

Think I will try the loctite on it soon.....good suggestion.

I don't know if using loctite is the correct solution for this particular applications. Aren't you supposed to use a nylock nut on the top instead? These nuts are known not to loosen up.

Mine has a nylok nut, but they are still backing off after awhile. Maybe we need new nylok nuts?

Maybe a better solution is to use a second nut as a jam nut. Not sure if there is enough thread exposed, though.

you never re-torque a nyloc nut.

always use new.

ah....makes sense. The nylon is now just threaded and not providing a real "lock". Will look for new.
Thanks for switching on the light.
