Steering Angle Sensor vs Aftermarket Steering Wheel?

Somewhere in the back of my little brain I think I remember reading something about a component of the steering angle sensor being built into the back/hub of the OEM steering wheel. This means that when you install an aftermarket steering wheel you no longer have an SAS reference going to the various computers in the car. . .

Can anyone confirm or deny that this is true??? Thanks!!

Since the steering wheel sensor is an integral part of the ABS system, I would think that a failure of this sensor would trigger the ABS inop light. Well, I have an aftermarket wheel and my ABS works great.

So, my 2c.

Ah, good point. I don't have ABS so never thought about that. The only think I can think of that would go against that thought is if it defaulted to "straight ahead" and just always told the ABS computer the wheels were pointed straight. . .

I'm going to fish around and see if I can find the source where I read this . . .

Jarrod, the steering angle sensor remains on the steering column when the OEM wheel is removed. On the back side of the OEM wheel there are three holes near the center hub which allow three pins on the rotating portion of the angle sensor to engage the wheel. The three holes/pins are orientated so they can only engage in the proper position, as long as you put the wheel back on straight the angle sensor will be fine.

All the quality aftermarket steering wheel hubs I’ve seen have holes for the steering angle sensor so adding an aftermarket hub/wheel should not affect the ABS.

Thanks Kev! The 3 hole thing is what I read about. Good to see you on the forums. I hear you should have power galore this year!! I look forward to seeing your car out this spring!

also for those that have ACD, the steering angle sensor is integral to that. if you can't figure out why your three lights are flashing, that could be one reason why...

Are you talking about the 3 holes around where the steering wheel slides onto the steering shaft?

I have a Splash hub, and it does it a bit differently, the clock spring mechanism is captured by a cutout in the hub at the bottom, so that's what causes the clock spring to rotate with the steering wheel.

Just a different way of achieving the same thing, but people might think that a hub that doesn't have 3 holes isn't going to operate properly with the steering angle sensor which isn't necessarily true.

we had to modify the hub to fit the steering wheel sensor.
We ended up cutting out a little piece of it. And painted to black, so it is basically invisible.
Works perfect and seamlessly.
make sure you will not turn or play with the sensors keep them on the original position. You can very easily damage them.
Than you have to buy a new one + recalibrate them. Also without the sensor the S-AWC is not working.

show me what it would look like please what proce did you cut out I ended up cutting the clock spring wire soo now I have to replace the clock spring and probably ly recalibrate the steering sensor because I have all the lights obvious but no abs issues or really any issues besides steering being tougher at the moment but I was asking because I just want to cut the plug on the outside cover of the clock spring you know what I mean?
