A few of my close calls in HPDE

I compiled a few of my close calls from last year. Overall, it was a good season, but I still have a lot to learn

Nice compilation. The off on Monticello south look too close for comfort.

How does Monticello compare against something like NJMP? I did their winter events last year and had a blast so I've been meaning to try it dry but haven't had the chance yet.

alot of ppl watch videos from inside the car and can't tell how fast you are going. You were moving quick in some of those... Sounds like you scared the **** out of that one instructor, haha, he just wanted out. What were they yelling at you from behind the wall?

We only did the MMC south, both are fine. If I had the choice between MMC south and NJMP, I'll take NJMP.

That first one was a close call for sure, but you to reign it back in. Sounds like the rear end was quite the handful although that rise in the road followed by the turn on the backside is going to definitely lighten the car up.

On the last clip at Watkins Glen the emergency line you took diving to the inside is about normal for me there since we have been doing late passing exercises pushing the limits of entering that turn to the extreme. Now when surprises happen it's second nature and that rate of closure wouldn't have even alarmed me.

Thanks for the highlight reel!

Great footage. I haven't had a chance to take the Evo to a hpde yet but I am definitely looking forward to it.

Obviously close calls and no incidents! Looks like you could afford to look up more, most of those issues wouldn't have been so bad had you not been concentrating on the immediate front of your car. Driving in the rain is an art, and its important to learn how to manage that. Quick snaps off the throttle is an easy way to find yourself in a world of hurt-- especially in a twitchy AWD car. You may want to go do a skid pad day (they're popular on your coast) when its wet to just get super used to the smooth, quick reactions required to be fast, and safe.

Here's a qualifying run in an E46 M3 at NJMP in the rain-- on slicks. These are not my fast laps (I will never post one on youtube) but they were within 4-tenths of the hot lap which was good for pole position that day. The laps in the video are me just testing out the traction around the track and heating the tires.

Notice that when the car goes sideways, the throttle is never 100% lifted. Its more like a 50% thing. This keeps weight on the rear and momentum up, as well as keeping from shocking the drivetrain.

Here's another example, this time from a VERY stiff Riley Corvette ALMS GT2 car. Again, no fast laps, but these were good enough for about 3rd or 4th fastest at the time. This car has traction control, but it never completely cuts ignition. In fact, it was actually on quite a low setting. Again, its all about that momentum. Its okay to miss the apex every now and then as long as you can power out on a drier line and maintain very good apex speed.

(Ignore the shaky hands... there was a lot going one!)

Another important thing to remember is that if you're off track or heading off track, "grab a bucket-- it's time to bail". Make sure that you don't try to save it while its off. Its much better to spin to a stop and head back on track with any kind of speed.

Hope this helps... have a good 2010 season!

Awesome reply Matt

be safe out there, and start looking ahead, watching your video made me think 'Why the hell is he still looking forward for??? ur eyes should have marked the turn ~3 seconds ago

I had a close call with a cobra, he lost it infront of me while exiting turn 9 at PIR.
and last week ... lets say that rain owned my trail braking techniques

nevertheless, be safe out there all of you and happy 2010 season
