Perfect Track Wheels Thread

Just want to start a thread to discuss what you think are the best track wheels out there for your EVO VIII-IX. In the past I have run 5Zigen FN01R-C in 18x9.5 and also WedsSport SA-70 in 18x10, always with either 265/30/18 or 285/30/18 tires. I recently received what I now think are the best wheels for the $$ for this width of tire. Here are some pics of my new WedsSport TC105N in 18x9.5+35 :

For the price, under $2K, they are super light. They are only about a pound more than CE28N's, yet about 33% less $$. They are about 3-4# lighter than the SA-70's and 5Zigens I have, and over 5# lighter than the custom 18x11 CCW's I had. So far I truly believe that, if you are running a 265-285 width tire these are the best buy for track wheels. . .

I had my 19lb NT03+M in 18x9.5 and ran 285/30/18's. At ~19lbs, and $1050 shipped that I got them from (hotlap motorsports now out of business) they were a fantastic deal.

I keep it cheaper now and run MR BBS wheels with 245/40/17. My wallet is much happier.

The Enkei's do seem like another good option. Looks like they currently run around $1200-$1400 which is awesome, but only come in +27 or +40 offset which is not quite ideal. The +27 may not fit easily in the rear with a 285-width Hoosier, and the +40 probably will need a spacer in the front and the rear with a fatty tire? They also weigh about 2# more each than the TC105N, but for the price difference that seems like a good trade off for most folks. . .

If you need spacers or have fitment issues with 285-width Hoosiers feel free to post up. Good info - thanks

FWIW - I have not had the new wheels on the car yet - so I don't know if I will need spacers. Best guess is 5-10mm spacer in the front and no spacer in the rear. . .

What about the Enkei RPF1? Lighter than the NT03. Some say there is spoke flex issues but AMS used to run them on TA1 and I think now on their evoX TA car too. 18x10 +38. Will need spacers front and rear but thats easy to do with some ARP studs and you retain the ability to rotate tires. Seriously thinking about these for my autox setup this year.

Another good option. Also about $1200-$1400, plus spacers. Have heard about the flex issue, but AMS and Nils have run them so it must be GTG.

1# heavier for the 9.5, 1.5# heavier for the 10". Great weights for the price difference. I guess the Weds are just a good mid-point as far as weight and cost between the Enkeis and the Volks. . .

I would say RPF1's would be the best wheels

I've got both 18x9.5 + 40 and 17x9.5 +38 03M's. For the 17's you don't need spacers but they don't look...the part. The 18's look way better. Spacing for the 18's I use a 25mm up front and a 5mm in the back with extended studs all around. With the 5mm in the back it helped to clear the axel nut (couldn't use the cover, which i don't anymore) and also the control arm that's forward of the rear tire. With 285 R1's which are really more like 300 it only rubbed every now and then. My rear's are oem fenders rolled like most of us already have.

Spacers=BAD + Dangerous. Do it right and get the extended rods, otherwise you may end up like this guy.....

Good Thread!

I'm pretty particular with my wheels these days. Probably because I've bought cheap ones in the past and paid the price. First were Rota's - Boost model not even sold anymore than literally broke all 5 spokes and came off the car. Bad ending (not my Evo).
Bad:

Also bad was my 5Zigen's. I used to run 2 sets of FN01R-C's in 17x9 +35. Btw, just weighed one - 19.5 lbs. That is until I had one crack on me in a 1.22g 85mph turn. That felt wicked!
Bad:

Now since then, I've picked up a set of Volk LE28's as well as a set of Forgeline ZX3R's - both in 18x9.5" fitment. Both fit great, don't need spacers, can handle 255-285 Hoosiers with very minimal rubbing and are all FORGED.

Sucky part is both aren't cheap. I'm constantly on the lookup for something that's lighter, fits the wallet and is the right offset to NOT run a 20mm spacer (no thx Enkei). Wedsport TC105n are about the only option, I just wish they were a color other than silver offered! If they were, I'd have bought a set last year in 18x9.5".

Someone told me awhile back that if you're running spacers/extended wheels studs, that you should constantly check if they TQed when you're running at the track because I heard they come loose? Don't know if that's correct info or not but I'll be checking at the end of every session, so my wheels don't fall off

IIRC the owner was actually running the wrong lug nuts.

I have the Wedsport TC-105N's and you do need a front spacer. I think I have a 10mm with arp extended studs. Very happy with the wheel and run 265's with fenders rolled in the rear.
