Official 2013 Formula One Discussion Thread
Yea that's usually my argument as well. Not saying NASCAR drivers aren't good, or the best at what they do, but I think F1 drivers could probably learn NASCAR faster than NASCAR driver could do f1. F1 is a whole different world. Not just driving, but fitness. Some NASCAR guys probably wouldn't even fit in a F1 car. Lol. But everybody has their opinions and likes, I'm just huge into F1. I think they are by far the best drivers on earth. Hard to compare drivers to different types of racing types but I think if they could, F1 drivers would be ahead by far. But that's my opinion, doesn't make it right. Whatever you enjoy, you enjoy. As long as you are a race fan, I'm good with you. Lol
There's probably 4 or 5 NASCAR guys who could make the jump. Kyle Busch is one of those guys like Kimi, they can drive anything and win. I'd include Tony Stewart in that category, except Tony isn't what you'd call a fitness buff.
Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, Jeff Gordon... all could probably make that jump. Though I suspect they'd be more akin to Webber - good but not great.

I think they have to submit a certain number of "maps" to the FIA for the season. The teams can run whatever they want any given weekend, as long as its one of the maps submitted. The exact number that gets submitted to the FIA I'm not sure of...
What a race. Vettel dominant as ever and Grojan once thought of as crash boy has matured. Kimi got out in time. I imagine it was just a matter of time before Grojan started giving him the exhaust fumes.
Sam Poseys moment on Vettel was great. Seems to me it's only certain fans that dislike home. Much of the announcers seem to have converted. Not that it matters to me. I love the guy even if everybody hated him.
I can never understand how people say he is arrogant. Helping the mechanics when he should be celebrating and what he said to his team and how he said it at the end of the COTA race shows he isn't. And an arogent person loves being told he is the best. Vettel gets so uncomfortable and usually somehow changes the subject.
I wasn't into F1 during the Schumacher era, now I have my chance to say I watched the greatest driver to ever sit I an F1 car. Exciting time for those that appreciate instead of hate.
I didn't get to watch Michael much so I don't know his personality or work ethic other than what I hear on TV but I wonder if Vettel was coached by Michael, not do much the driving part but the team part.
Next year should be fun. I'm not predicting a Red Bull fall. Same people there but like Vettel said we have to enjoy the moment.

Underwhelming race IMO. Couple of great passes but over all not much going on just like in Abu Dhabi. Pirelli need to step up and bring the softer compounds to CoTA, this hard and medium stuff sucks.
Yeah, Tire choice seemed to make it a rather dull race. I don't know if it was the hard/medium combo or that there's just not a substantial delta between the two... I wish Pirelli would do 2-gaps (hard/soft or medium/super soft) to force some more strategy in. Everybody 1 stopped except the people who needed repairs. The time penalty for pitting at CoTA isn't very high, so I would expect a hard/soft combo would have a lot of possible strategies... from 1 stop for back markers who can start on the hard to 3 or 4 stops and churn through softs... Would be much more interesting.
At least the weather was nice...

Greatest team with the greatest driver able to make the team great. Team wasn't great before he got there. It's not just the driving skill of the driver but being able to explain in a way the engineers understand how the car is behaving. Seb may be very good at that so his info may have helped Newey design a better car. It's Ying and Yang. One doesn't work to its fullest without the other. Giving one credit means you give both credit.

Vettel is racing with four other WDC's plus many excellent drivers and has THIRTY-TWO seconds of interval at the end?
If he was competing with total amateurs on the grid I'd buy it, but he's not. There's clearly something else that has been propelling Vettel to 4 championships and it's not his feet.
That's not really a valid argument. As an opinion, sure, go with it. But logically it doesn't add up saying "because W,X,Y,Z are great drivers then Driver A can't be that much faster".
Has it ever happened in the history of mankind that a person came along and accomplished something that at the time seemed unimaginable?
What I noticed about F1 fans, and maybe humans in general is they tend to see "guilt" before "innocence". Instead of holding judgement and only going off the evidence that is available now, which is Vettel is a 4x WC at a young age and destroying records, they say "something is up".
Why not go with what you KNOW until it has been proven differently?
I don't go into a relationship assuming she is a liar and a cheater. I go in assuming she is loyal and honest and only she can change that by future actions.

Whoever believes that thirty-two seconds of interval from a race leader is due to skill needs to pass whatever they're smoking.

I think this is already thoroughly covered in this thread, but 2013 F1 season = elite driver + best team + weak competition = dominance.
Is Vettel the GOAT? I don't think so, I don't know how he would fare in a 60s F1 car with no downforce, or Senna/Prost's cars from the early 90s. The Red Bull cars are superb, and the team is superb - all their pit stops are mistake free and the routinely gain a second or more over some of the other teams. I suspect any of the elite drivers from today (Alonso, Button, Hamilton, Kimi, etc) or recent past (Schumi, Senna, Prost, etc) could win with Red Bull, especially given the opposition's lack of pace this year. And it's pretty clear this was an off year for many teams - Ferrari with their wind tunnel issues, Lotus with budget issues, McLaren having a lousy car, Mercedes with tire wear issues, etc. I think most teams wrote off 2013 after Hungary, if not sooner.
