2013 STU Discussion!
(Edit: I saw you and Grice already talked about it.)
Hey Doug!
I wish they would use Motor Octane (MON)
But these aren't lab coat SCCA techs making the rules, they're 5 regular guys I race with. So IMO it would most likely be based on Octane =(R+M)/2. Or whatever is the generic term for octane.
My understanding is fuel would be pulled from the car and tested. Probably based on what is done in SCCA club racing.
I think it's safer and easier to stay at 100 oct (R+M)/2, which as you mentioned could be as low as 95 MON. Then there would be no worry about being over, if mixing in some 100. There's also a very strong chance if there's support for dropping to 95oct, then the SEB will just go to 93oct to avoid the mixing issues.
When the STAC banned e85, they also got some comments to drop 100oct. I think if they get feedback to support street legal 100 oct, there's a good chance to keep the allowance.

Now that I'm seeing things apples-to-apples I agree 100% . Of all the "street legal" race fuels I could find info on out there only 3 were over 100 AKI.. I called the local distributor of one awhile back, $19 a gallon
I can't see going to anything lower in terms of octane than what is available to everyone to keep the playing field level. Those of us with California 91 (worse than your garden variety 91) or say a western mountain state with 89 as premium can't get access to 93 or 94 pump gas available on the east coast to tune with. Anyone across the country can get access to 100 octane. Honestly, if they went to 93 octane, then they may as well get rid of the ability to do any engine mapping since the adaptive ECUs will handle that when competing between locations.
Not that I'm in favor of that, just let the rule stand as is without the octane limit.

For some reason I quit getting emails when this thread was updated.
For some back ground on this (E85), the WDYT on limiting the octane rating of approved fuels actually came from member feedback. There were a lot of responses to our E85 ban proposal that asked for an expansion of the rule to cover gasoline. Enough that it made sense to send it out to membership as a WDYT and get feedback from more people specifically on this issue. The STAC itself isn't unanimous in a decision to advise the SEB one way or the other. And I've got no idea which way the SEB is leaning. Keep the letters coming, but don't just cut/paste someone else's letter.

... I know of a few letters that recommended banning 100oct INSTEAD of e85... I sure hope our AC or the SEB did not mistake our letters, as this is NOT what many of us wrote in and requested the AC/SEB to look into...

oh come on, who is going to start the 2014 STU thread?
My car is up on jackstands, about 50% of the 2014 season work is completed, but the remaining 50% is much more involved... And will await the royal SEB & STAC (paging kjchristopher) decision on 100oct before I go down my planned path...
First event April 12th.. tick tock tick tock.
