I've been reading along and debating whether I should just jump into ASP or continue with STU for the Tour next weekend...
I currently run ASP locally and have a couple mods that put me in that class now (AP v3 on stage 1 map and wheel spacers), but both could be removed to legally run in STU.
From the looks of it, most of the other Xs are in ASP too. It might be a better fit for mine in there...
What do you guys think would be best? And is it too late to switch classes since I'm already registered?

You could switch classes until you register on Friday and than some, so don't worry about that part. Just figure out what is the best for you to do. Things like tire availability would be one of the first things I would consider, unless you have a set of Hoosiers that are ready to be used. You still need to set the car slightly different between the street and race tires, unless you know already what to do about that part.

What changes would be needed to swap from stock wheels/tires to race wheels/tires? I have a race setup that I plan on using eventually (18x9.5 RPF1s w/ 285/30 Advan AD08s), but I was going to wait until my stock tires are worn. I don't think my alignment will change much... or will it?
Right now I'm still on stock wheels and tires and running 25mm spacers all around. Also on Swift Spec-R springs and had my alignment done to get as much camber as possible with stock struts (~-2F, -1.5R) and 0 toe all around (because it's my DD too).
If I stick with STU I just have to flash the Stage 0 tune on the AP so my boost isn't changed and remove my wheel spacers. From what I've been reading in this thread it seems I'm at a bigger disadvantage in STU compared to ASP though. If I go into ASP I wouldn't have to remove or undo anything... in fact I could add some of the other stuff I've been stockpiling...
Or is my assumption way off base that ASP would be a better option?

I go back and forth between 255 street tires and 285 R-comps and the only real setup change I could use is less camber on street tires. The rest is sound and balance isn't really effected much.
Doesn't really matter if you run STU or ASP as this point, you aren't likely to be competitive in either is theirs an option
. Just run where you can and have fun. Feel free to come by SM and say hi though, Ill be in the Black Evo (152) getting my *** kicked by a GTR and 240sx.

Thanks for the info. I figured I'd be okay going back and forth between wheel setups.Originally Posted by Dallas J

Haha you know, that's not the first time people said I wouldn't be competitive... Then I started winning... while my car was still pretty much stock. Originally Posted by Dallas J

It's all about having fun though and I'm not expecting to do too well on a national level by any means. I'll be just as happy to be there if I take DFL in any class. I just want to go for the experience and start taking my racing to the next level, so really I'm trying to decide which class will benefit me the most in that aspect.
I'll definitely stop by SM and check out your car. If it's anything like the SM Evo IX out here it should be pretty impressive to watch.

IIRC wheels spacers up to 5mm are allowed, but any bigger aren't. It's based on the Street class specs for STU.Originally Posted by SS RX7 r2

Most of us in STU run wide spacers in front for brake clearance. The only limitation is no flared fenders and 245 tires. As Doug mentioned in the table he posted, wheels are unrestricted. LMK if you ever need spacers.Originally Posted by flawlessninja

I see three decent options to reestablish parity:
* Remove the AWD restrictions - This would mean 285s in STU - I see this as unlikely due to wanting to protect STX, which is not broken at all right now. But, it could really bring out the newer boost buggies who would now be in a much better place in terms of tire to weight.
* Partial takeback - 2WD cars go down to 265s - they get to keep their 18's, though and just stretch the tire a little more - no one has to sell wheels.
* More tire for AWD but keep them different - AWD 265, 2WD 285. The part about this that would suck is that anyone with a boost buggie who is on 17's would have to sell their wheels and get 18s because there really aren't any 265-17 tires (I think maybe Dunlop used to make them?). This might be the best balance though.
Remove AWD restrictions - yes, only way I see it now. Even on same sized tires we are still not on equal footing (lol yes pun). This would allow X's to come play (which have been sitting on the side line waiting since '08...but the STAC continues to ignore, stating they wont make model specific rules blah blah blah)Originally Posted by Butt Dyno

Partial takeback most likely wont happen. The most 'takeback' that could happen would be down to 275's (C5 stock rear tire size)
More tire but different - 265's wont be enough
Looks like we will all be looking for new wheels, whether we get more tire or not = need 'em for ASP

Like Rick said, spacers are free in STU.If you tent camp and need a shower, tire sprayers do great lol
And don't miss out on stopping at the Spruce at night hehe, I recommend the "Trashcan" You could stumble back to the site if you have too lol. And FYI if your contemplating ASP, the word you're looking for is HOOSIER.

Haha, Not if you plan on sleeping that night. We camp at the main camp site in town, perfect location to stumble back from the spruce and they have showers.

Oh really? Well in that case I think I'll just stick with STU since I won't need to take off my spacers. I don't think they do much for me performance-wise anyway. Flashing my AP back to the Stage 0 map isn't a big deal...Originally Posted by SS RX7 r2

I'm going to get my *** handed to me, but at least I'll know it's because I'm going up against some of the best in the nation.
I was told the national champs in STU were in the NW (I know Geoff is one of them, who's the other?), which is part of the reason I wanted to run in that class. In order to get better you need to be around people better than you, right? I'm hoping to learn as much as I can from you seasoned vets.
Speaking of which, I signed up for the Evo school thing next Friday. If anyone is there on Friday that's willing to ride along on the practice course and give me some pointers, please do!

That's funny... I thought it was just an Idaho thing because everywhere else I've gone and tried to order one the bartender had no idea what I was talking about. Then when I have them make me one everyone looks at me with a funny look and asks about it. Best drink ever!
I booked a reservation at one of the camping/rv places near the racing site. I'll be camping in my tent and will definitely stumble back and forth to the bar after racing. Looking forward to meeting you guys and partying it up next weekend!

Awesome! Packwood and Epic are two words that go together nicely
There's an epic story about "The Dumpster" on my Bday...glad to have survived lol.
The other STU National champs are Ladies, Gretchen (my co-driver) and Michelle Miller (now in STF).

That's cool. I didn't know there were some female champs up there too.
