2014 STU Discussion!
The current 245-width limitation for AWD cars was meant to level the playing field against the 2WD cars. But now that the 350Z (and maybe the C5) are in play it has become more of a handicap than an equalizer.
The 350Z really is a great all-around platform. Also I have a lot of respect for Brian Peters' driving. But the current class structure seems to be doing more to drive people away from STU than to bolster the class' size, which was the whole idea behind the class switch-up in the first place.
Hi guys,
I am just not a pre-X EVO guy and don't know much about the potential of those earlier versions. From the SCCA Forums, they claim this:
"evo 8 RS can get even lighter than a C5 and pretty damn close to an STU 350z"
But, I don't know what the real truth here is. What is really to expect for the power and weight levels of the Evo 8 RS?
To me that doesn't make that much sense and I would not say that EVO 8 (RS or not) can get below C5 which is in 3000 lb range even in BS trim. Also, that same C5 makes over 330 wheel HP and over 350 lb of torque (still in BS, so STU should be above that) and that is another thing that (to my knowledge) EVOs could reach in STU trim. Or am I really wrong here?

An early model Evo 8 should be a bit lighter (all things equal) than an Evo 9, but you would also be a bit more limited in power due to the non-MIVEC engine and smaller turbo. A 2005 Evo 8 and all Evo 9s also have ACD and helical front LSDs, though the 04 RS comes with a helical front LSD as well. As far as power goes, 350 ft-lbs of torque seems high for an STU Evo (8/9 specifically).

2) I'm pretty sure that mlane guy is just a troll.
3) The datapoints have been discussed here at length. I don't think there is a lot we can do at this point other than wait for more data to come in.
Hey STU guys!
I'm pretty new to autocross still, but I've done a few events in previous years and this is the first year I'm doing all the local events (or as many as I can) in Boise, ID.
I run in ASP locally (actually a bump group that combines all the SP classes) so I can be with all the other Evo guys. My car is VERY under-prepped compared to theirs (only mod so far is Swift Spec-R springs), but I pulled out a couple wins and podiums in all 4 events so far this year.
I registered for the Championship Tour in Packwood next month and decided to drop down into STU class because of how under-prepped my car is. This is going to be my first national event, so I'm pretty excited to see how I stack up with a more competitive crowd! Is anyone else doing this event?
I'm not really expecting too much out of myself at the Tour... I really just want to learn as much as I can and get better, so if you guys have any tips or tricks of the trade please send them my way! I could always use advice on mods, suspension geometry, driving techniques, etc. and need as much info as I can get.
I'm also doing the Evolution School thing on the Friday before the Tour in Packwood to see if I can pick up some pointers.
Hope to see you guys out there and look forward to meeting you.

Welcome to the STU ranks, where we all get to chase down a 350z, or fight for 2nd best... I suggest you do some reading, all the 'tips/tricks/advice' have been discussed 100x before.

The Evo School the Friday before the tour is probably not what you think. It's likely the Hole Shot school, which is just the basics of launching at a ProSolo. That Friday is the day before the Packwood Pro, so that would make sense to me.
The description said it's a 3 hour session on the practice course with instructors on Friday morning. I think it said something about getting around 12 laps in... not sure how informative it'll be, but my other alternative was to go to rally school at Dirt Fish the week following the Tour, which is WAY more expensive.
At this point I'm just trying to get as good as I can as fast as I can and, if anything, this driving course gives me more seat time.
